Tomb Raider Series Starring Sophie Turner Begins Production at Prime Video

News

Sophie Turner is Lara Croft in the first look at Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series.

The streamer has released a photo of the actress as the iconic character from the video game franchise to celebrate the start of production. It was taken on the backlot of the show’s production stages.

Created by writer and executive producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Tomb Raider is based on the source material with the same name. It follows the adventures of world-famous archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft.

Waller-Bridge is the co-showrunner with executive producer Chad Hodge.

Tomb Raider was ordered to series from Waller-Bridge in May 2024. “If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode. Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators,” Phoebe Waller-Bridge said.

“Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all,” Waller-Bridge added.

Turner’s casting was announced by Prime Video last September. At the time, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that production would start on January 19, 2026.

“I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got,” Turner said in a statement.

“They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking,” Turner continued.

Angelina Jolie played Lara Croft in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. Alicia Vikander portrayed the character in 2018’s Tomb Raider
