Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 10 Review: Shark Attack! Part 2: Orca!
This new Ryan Murphy ABC dramedy may not be dead in the water. Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 10, “Shark Attack! Part 2: Orca!” delivers one thrilling hour of television. We can only hope that the series continues this momentum.
This could make it worth the investment.
The episode starts right where Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 9, “Shark Attack!” ends. The Odyssey crew finds themselves in the dark, literally.

Maybe all the episodes should start in the dark because the second part really thrives in this condition. The intense situation has gravity. The series often puts these characters in high-tension circumstances.
However, many don’t achieve the intended effect.
You don’t quite buy the danger of everything these medical professionals endure. Even though “Shark Attack! Part 2 Orca!” takes predictable routes, that doesn’t deter from its thrill. We know Avery and Brooke will escape the orcas but it’s fun to pretend they might not.
We know Avery will finally see Tristan as a worthy romantic interest but we still cheer when they kiss.
This is the Doctor Odyssey that we’ve been wanting. It’s an exciting blend of suspense, romance, and ridiculousness that feels more natural in this episode. It just took the team behind the show ten episodes to reach this level of entertainment.

“Shark Attack! Part 2: Orca” probably works better than many previous episodes because the suspense works so effortlessly. Sharks are a believable danger for a show set at sea.
Doctor Odyssey also doesn’t go overboard by making the sharks seem unrealistic, at least in this episode. They don’t start biting on the ship or eating people. Additionally, the CGI is minimal and does not scream special effects.
The ABC series also has layers of suspense: the surgery, the sharks, and the power outage. These elements work together to make it a hard day for the entire crew.
However, it doesn’t sacrifice human moments for thrills. “Shark Attack! Part 2: Orcas” has some of the best moments between these characters.
The first part of “Shark Attack!” sets Brooke and Avery up as romantic rivals. They like Max. He continues to play the flirt game by giving Brooke attention but also trying to keep Avery as an option. By the end of the episode, he has neither of them…at least for now.

Avery picks Tristan, and Brooke leaves before Max and her get a chance to explore their chemistry and attraction. Brooke and Avery also resolve their tension by actually talking it out.
These moments make Brooke a much more likable character. They also make you want Avery to have it all: her career and a family.
Unfortunately, “Shark Attack !Part 2: Orca!” is probably the exception and not the rule. We expect next week to lose some of this momentum. However, we admire and celebrate this one because it shows the show’s potential.
A potential that hopefully it taps into more often.
Stray Thoughts
- Tristan really is the most valuable character of this episode. Glad Avery finally takes notice.
- Doctor Odyssey opens the door wide open for Ray’s return. I hope he joins the crew soon because there are a lot of possible storylines involving him.
- The door is slightly open for Brooke’s return, which is a bit shocking. She may return but this doesn’t seem as easy to predict.
- Ray, Rosie, and Spence have some great moments, which makes me think the series will give these characters more attention in the latter half of the season.
- “Shark Attack Part 2: Orca” has plenty of romance without overdoing it or making the show overly sexual. This is the right direction. I do enjoy the crazy threesome plotlines but those should be more of a thing for special occasions.
- I really invested in Brody and Josie’s love story. It’s so cute.
