Lucky 13 Canceled After One Season by ABC

The luck has run out for the game show Lucky 13.

The ABC Network has confirmed the competitive game show hosted by Shaquille O’Neal and Gina Rodriguez has been canceled after just one season.

Deadline exclusively reports that Lucky 13 was created by the same team that made the giant hit Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and produced by Studio 1. In return for funding the whole series, Studio 1 gets a share of ABC’s advertising and product placement sales for the show.

Unfortunately, the ad revenue fell off the producers’ forecast after the premiere. While Lucky 13 launched with an impressive 2.7 million viewers on ABC and even ranked No. 1 on the week of its finale, the series couldn’t maintain the ad revenue the producers were hoping throughout its run.

TVLine confirms the series didn’t generate enough ad revenue to warrant a Season 2 renewal.

Studio 1 CEO Adrian Woolfe told Deadline that the studio plans to protect the Lucky 13 IP and reevaluate the company’s business plan going forward.

An ABC representative claims that Lucky 13 can return on a different platform or some other form, but there are no current plans to continue it.

Lucky 13 tested competitors’ knowledge within certain topics with 13 true-or-false questions. However, the twist is that players will be asked how accurately they predicted the questions. If a player accurately guessed how successfully they answered all 13 questions, they would take home one million dollars.

Hosts O’Neal and Rodriguez served as executive producers for Lucky 13 through their production studios. O’Neal is a renowned basketball player and businessman. Rodriguez is an actress most famous for starring in Jane the Virgin.

Woolfe served as the showrunner of Lucky 13, while Kevin Bacon was also an executive producer. Other executive producers for the series include Mark Wells, Glenn Coomber, Aaron Stone, Alastair Burlingham, Gary Raskin, David Schiff, Scott Henry, and GW Wright.

Lucky 13 premiered in July 2024, with its 10-episode season concluding in September 2024 on ABC.
