Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Oh, Daddy

Doctor Odyssey, Reviews

Doctor Odyssey decides to undo every exciting progression. The show made a bold move in Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 6, “I Always Cry at Weddings” by introducing the possibility of a polyamorous relationship instead of a tired, boring love triangle. Then Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 7, “Oh, Daddy,” says we’re not that progressive.

It was just a one-time night of fun.

The removal of the throuple possibility (for now) isn’t the problem. The issues lie in the reigniting of the love triangle, and not even adding the fun twist that Max and Tristan now realize their feelings for one another too.

Instead, We must endure the return of the Tristan and Max rivalry. It is the main regressive development of this love triangle. The friendship they built over the last couple of episodes seems no more.

They’re both jealous because they like Avery, so the circle continues.

Like many millennials, I grew up adoring Joshua Jackson as Pacey, so a part of me is always open for another series where he will make my inner tween/teen swoon. Unfortunately, Doctor Odyssey has yet to deliver fantastic romantic moments.

My inner tween is not swooning at all.

The love triangles only slightly became interesting because of the possibility of this new polyamory dynamic. It’s now become aggravating again.

In every episode, we must somehow deal with a new development recycling the same things. One minute Tristan is trying to get over Avery, and then he’s back to being obsessed and in love.

Max considers being professional, but then says no and sleeps with Avery. Now, he slept with Avery and Tristan.

He continues to fail all kinds of professional codes of ethics.

The writers have not worked hard enough to make viewers invest in Avery’s choice between Max and Tristan. We don’t care yet because the build-up has been too fast.

The most memorable TV love stories have a rich history and unforgettable moments. Doctor Odyssey tries to skip the hard part and move right to the good stuff.

CALDWELL ÒBOBÓ TIDICUE

We need the development before we jump for joy in either direction.

“Oh, Daddy” plays out in typical series fashion with some well-timed comedy but some over-the-top drama. The comedy often works in this series, but the drama usually faces rough waters.

However, this time, there is a highlight.

“Oh, Daddy” has many great guest stars, including Bob the Drag Queen/Caldwell Obobo Tidicue, Cheyenne Jackson, and John Stamos. All the actors do a fine job, but Bob the Drag Queen really gives the show its best moment.

She provides much-needed heart and substance to this lackluster episode. Her stage performances are also very entertaining.

Bob the Drag Queen’s stand-out scene involves her discussing the struggles of being a drag queen and a Black person. She has to be glamourous to feel appreciation.

Bob is particularly likable and heartfelt in this role and moment. You feel for her as she pours out some of her struggles. You can tell that her speech comes from a genuine place, so it makes Bob’s performance so much more believable.

“Oh. Daddy” takes another step backward as Doctor Odyssey continues its obsession with this love triangle. If only it had as much substance and heart as Bob the Drag Queen’s speech. Then maybe we would care more about who ends up with whom.
