Lanterns Adds Aaron Pierre As Superhero John Stewart
Beware his power, as Aaron Pierre has been cast as Green Lantern John Stewart for HBO’s Lanterns series.
HBO is producing the Lanterns series with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. As previously reported, it was ordered to series in June 2024. The series will be part of the greater DC Cinematic Universe orchestrated by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Lanterns has no release date.
Pierre will join the new connected universes with other DC superheroes, including David Corenswet’s Superman in 2025’s Superman film.

Pierre is set to play one of two main characters in the Lanterns series. Unlike other superhero titles, a full corps of Green Lanterns police the galaxy.
The Lanterns show follows the adventures of veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan training the newly recruited John Stewart. The two Lanterns investigate a mysterious murder in the middle of America.
Deadline previously reported that Pierre was in the running for the role back in September. The rumor came hot off Pierre’s breakout role in Rebel Ridge for Netflix.
Lanterns won’t be Pierre’s first time working on a DC project. The actor previously had a role on Syfy’s Krypton show.

The other Lantern joining Pierre’s John Stewart is Silver Age superhero Hal Jordan. While DC Studios and Warner Bros. haven’t officially confirmed a casting, Deadline also claims Friday Night Lights‘s Kyle Chandler is in talks to play Jordan.
Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King are co-writing Lanterns. Mundy, Lindelof, King, and James Hawes will serve as executive producers for the series.
Hawes is also set to direct the first two episodes of the series. Hawes is a veteran film director who recently directed episodes for Slow Horses on AppleTV+.
Greg Berlanti and showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith initially developed a Green Lanterns series. Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine were previously cast as Green Lanterns Guy Gardner and Alan Scott before the series was scrapped after Gunn and Safran took over.
