Dead Boy Detectives Canceled by Netflix After One Season

News

Netflix has officially canceled its ghostly mystery series Dead Boy Detectives.

Variety exclusively reported the news, and The Hollywood Reporter corroborated it. It looks like these boys are dead for real this time, despite the good reviews.

Dead Boy Detectives‘s debut eight-episode season premiered on Netflix on Thursday, April 25, 2024.

Dead Boy Detectives starred George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri as Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, respectively — the ghosts of two boys who died young. The ghostly pair teamed up and opened a detective agency in the mortal realm, solving mysteries within a world of supernatural supporting characters.

Said characters include the psychic Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson), the DBDs’ landlord Jenny Green (Briana Cuoco), and the Night Nurse (Ruth Connell), steward of ghostling children.

The series is based on the DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman and artist Matt Wagner. The pair first appeared in Gaiman’s The Sandman comic series before spinning off into their own adventures.

Naturally, Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives was itself a spin-off of Netflix’s The Sandman TV series. It was initially envisioned as a Doom Patrol spin-off–versions of the Dead Boy Detectives appeared in that show’s fourth season–but it was reshaped (with new casting) when the project moved from Max to Netflix.

During the brief run of Dead Boy Detectives, characters from The Sandman — specifically Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and Despair (Donna Preston), two siblings of Dream (Tom Sturridge) — guest-starred.

This cancellation begs the question of what’s next for any future spin-offs of The Sandman. Per The Hollywood Reporterthe creators previously discussed a spin-off about Jenna Coleman’s character Johanna Constantine. The Sandman Season 2 is still a go, with Netflix confirming additional casting in July 2024.

The Dead Boy Detectives have also appeared in numerous comic series over their 30ish years of publication, penned by writers such as Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother), Ed Brubaker (Criminal), and Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian).

The source material is now your best bet if you want to follow further cases with the Dead Boy Detectives.

Dead Boy Detectives Season 1 is streaming on Netflix.
