Severance Season 2 Is Back in Production at Apple TV+

News, Severance

It’s official! Severance Season 2 is in production — again.

Apple TV shared the news by posting a behind-the-scenes photo featuring Adam Scott on X (formerly Twitter).

“A black and white action shot of Mark S. (Adam Scott) running down a long white hallway. On the right side of the picture is a large camera recording the scene, confirming Severance Season 2 is in production,” the caption read.

Severance‘s director and executive producer Ben Stiller reposted the photo, writing, “Back to work. #SEVERANCE,” on X.

The workplace thriller is back in production after work halted in May 2023 when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for fair contracts. Then, production remained halted when SAG-AFTRA also went on strike for fair deals in July 2023.

After reaching deals, the WGA’s strike ended in September 2023, and SAG-AFTRA’s strike ended in November 2023. The latter union’s members voted to ratify their new agreement in December 2023.

However, even before the strikes, Severance‘s sophomore season has had a bumpy production schedule.

The Apple TV+ drama went into production in October 2022 after its renewal in April.

“We are thrilled and delighted to be back on set for the exciting second chapter of Severance. Though we don’t know how long we’ve been gone or who we are outside, we are told people enjoy the show and we couldn’t be happier. Praise Kier!” Stiller said.

Apple TV+ even shared a BTS photo of Scott then, too. The streaming service also announced that eight new cast members would join Severance Season 2: Bob Balaban, Robby Benson, Stefano Carannante, Gwendoline Christie, John Noble, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Alia Shawkat, and Merritt Wever.

Then, reports from April 2023 shared that Severance Season 2 faced “significant delays due to the alleged falling out between co-showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman,” per TV Line.

The show quietly brought on House of Cards creator Beau Willimon “to assist with Season 2 (and beyond).” TV Line also reported that Stiller publicly cleared the air about any reports about the working relationship between Erickson and Friendman.

Stiller stated “that Season 2 is on schedule, the budget is the same as Season 1, Dan, Beau, and Mark are all working together… [Beau] was hired for Season 3 and since they don’t have a traditional writers’ room, it made sense he would get involved in the current season as well,” per TV Line.

Now, the psychological thriller is back in production, which means audiences are that much closer to learning what happens after Severance Season 1 Episode 9, “The We We Are,” which streamed in April 2022.

Written and created by Dan Erickson, Severance follows Adam Scott as Mark Scout, the leader of a team at Lumon Industries, where employees have a severance procedure that divides their memories between their work and personal lives.

Ultimately, Mark discovers he’s at the center of a mystery, forcing “him to confront the true nature of his work … and of himself,” per its synopsis.

Severance Season 2 also stars returning ensemble members Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, Tramell Tillman, Michael Chernus, and Christopher Walken.

Arquette will serve as a producer for Severance Season 2.

Erickson, Nicky Weinstock, Jackie Cohn, Mark Friedman, Adam Scott, Caroline Baron, and Sam Donovan executive produce the show. Richie Schwartz executive produces for Red Hour Films. Fifth Season is the studio behind the show.
