Our Flag Means Death Canceled by Max After Two Seasons
Revenge has sailed for the final time.
Max has canceled Our Flag Means Death after two seasons.
Creator-showrunner David Jenkins penned a heartfelt statement on Instagram. “I’m very sad I won’t set foot on the Revenge again with my friends, some of whom have become close to family. But I couldn’t be more grateful for being allowed to captain the damn thing in the first place,” Jenkins stated.
Our Flag Means Death is (very) loosely based “on the true adventures of 18th-century would-be pirate Stede Bonnet,” who boards the pirate ship Revenge, per its synopsis. Eventually, Stede finds friendship on the high seas — and love with the infamous Captain Blackbeard.
Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi starred as Stede and Blackbeard respectively. Our Flag Means Death Season 2 also starred Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, and Leslie Jones.
The Max Original comedy series debuted in 2022. Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Episodes 1-3, “Impossible Birds / Red Flag / The Innkeeper,” premiered in October 2023 on Max. The second and now final season concluded with Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Episode 8, “Mermen,” later that month.
Deadline reports that the award-winning show’s seasons will not be removed from Max.
“While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life,” a spokesperson for Max said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show,” the spokesperson added.
New cast members who joined Our Flag Means Death Season 2’s ensemble cast as recurring guest stars include Ruibo Qian, Madeleine Sami, Anapela Polataivao, and Erroll Shand, as well as guest stars Minnie Driver and Bronson Pinchot.
Taika Waititi executive produced the series alongside Jenkins. Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, and Antoine Douaihy also serve as executive producers.
