Such Brave Girls Season 1 Episodes 4-6 Review: Women Supporting Women, Sometimes Even in Healthy Ways
Such Brave Girls Season 1 Episodes 4-6 talk a lot about death, from those already gone to the loss of family and even people who aren’t actually dead all. Does that make any of the characters take things more seriously? Not on your life.
The second half of the season is arguably heavier than the first, from dealing with Deb’s jealousy over Dev’s dead wife (try saying that three times fast) to the passing of the girls’ grandmother on their dad’s site. Then there’s the matter of their dad’s own “death”. Whoops.
If there’s a polar opposite to handling such subjects with grace, this is what we’re greeted with, and we’ve come to expect nothing less. Finding God in a woodland church, dealing with how limited our time on Earth is—all of it is handled with more crass jokes than tears.

There is no moment where any of these characters become good people. Josie is still mocked for her depression. Billie still chases her ex, now engaging in a brief sensual stint with his ex-girlfriend. And Deb has created an entire charade of a dead spouse.
Yet there is still a degree of progress, even if it’s small and only truly comes in the final episode. We at least free Billie of her obsession and let Josie’s sexuality be recognized straight to the face of her own fanatical wannabe-boyfriend.
To be clear, they are all still riddled with the same flaws they always were. Above all, Deb is still lying about being a widow for financial gain to a man who seems highly unlike to provide it. And just when Dev is starting to grow on me, too.

As for the missing husband and father at the root of so much of this, he seems briefly poised to reappear for his mother’s funeral. Considering how awkward that would be in these circumstances, it may be best that he again turns tail and runs instead.
We’re left with what may be foreshadowing for a potential second season. Will the question of his return always linger? Or as he proven who he is once and for all, leaving our heroines to find for themselves the closure they’ve gone years without?
Either way, that’s not why we’d keep tuning in. This has never been a drama that we watch for the answers and resolutions that explain why these characters are a mess. We watch because they’re a mess, and it’s clear that will never truly change.

As ever, the acting and writing across the board get the credit for making such people so engaging. There’s hardly a character on screen I’d ever want to associate with in real life, and yet they’re loveable (if not necessarily likeable), warts and all.
Assuming the show is renewed and that the ladies take a few more baby steps in the midst of their chaotic lives, where would you like to see these steps take them? Just make sure you don’t get your hopes too high. There are standards to maintain.
