Upload Season 3 Episodes 1 and 2 Review: Ticking Clock / Strawberry

Reviews, Upload

Upload Season 3 Episode 1, “Ticking Clock,” and Upload Season 3 Episode 2, “Strawberry,” offer a lackluster return to Lakeview and our favorite characters.

After the intensity of “Ticking Clock” — that ending! — “Strawberry” moves at a glacial pace. All that momentum that “Ticking Clock” built up is gone in an instant, and none of the storylines in “Strawberry” even come close to matching it.

What doesn’t help is that the tone of Nathan and Nora’s storyline is drastically different in the second episode, and we’re not eased into the transition either.

We aren’t given the opportunity to watch them process anything and devise a new plan. Instead, we rejoin Nathan and Nora mid-mission with neither of them discussing what just happened.

The focus of their storyline shifts to covering the issues they are facing now that Nora’s not Nathan’s angel and Nathan is downloaded.

It makes sense that Upload would explore Nathan and Nora settling into a relationship and how it’s not a seamless transition, but it could have been executed a lot better, perhaps not while they are engaging in some awkward conversations with that random family.

“Ticking Clock” feels more like a finale episode rather than a premiere, and a lot of aspects of that episode would have worked better if that was the case. Do you agree?

One wish I have for Upload Season 3 is for Ingrid to be allowed the opportunity to grow as a character.

Upload likes to tease us by giving her a moment of self-growth followed by her completely regressing to her Nathan-obsessed and mean girl ways.

We catch of glimpse of Ingrid claiming she’s done making Nathan her whole personality, but as soon as she realizes back up Nathan still thinks they are dating, she’s all in again.

Ingrid states that she’s going to work on herself, and her coming clean about the hug suit is a step in the right direction. We can only hope that she continues to grow and that she gets a storyline outside of her relationship with Nathan — being mean to Tinsley doesn’t count.

Despite its flaws, it’s still nice to have new episodes of Upload to look forward to again. At this point, the shenanigans at Lakeview are what I’m most looking forward to, especially since you know our boy Luke will be right in the middle of things.

Stray Thoughts
  • How has Luke not seen backup Nathan yet?
  • Detective Sato’s betrayal is underwhelming.
  • Luke and Aleesha continue to be the best parts of the show.
  • Admittedly, Aleesha training the AIs is not all that funny or entertaining, but I still love her.
  • I need Tinsley to have some storylines outside of being obsessed with Nathan and bullied by Ingrid.
  • I don’t mind Matteo being jealous; he’s entertaining.

Allison is in a love affair with television that doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. Slightly damaged fictional characters are her weakness. She loves to spend her free time curled up with a cat and a show to binge-watch. Allison is a Tomatometer-approved critic (Rotten Tomatoes).
