Minx Season 2 Episode 3 Review: It’s Okay to Like It

Minx, Reviews

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.

Minx Season 2 Episode 3, “It’s Okay to Like It,” is set to pick up on some of the drama, but instead delivers a name-dropping episode that doesn’t really focus on the conversation of Minx

Picking up six months after the events of, Minx Season 2 Episode 2, “I Thought the Bed Was Gonna Fly,” we are now seeing Bottom Dollar Productions in its heyday with no ceiling in sight. But the time jumps come to the detriment of some of the relationships we’re invested in.

Constance Isn’t So Constant

First, let’s talk about Constance. Due to the time skip, we’ve missed out on how Constance integrated into Bottom Dollar. Yes, we do see her in the meeting and talking to Doug about merchandising, but the hints to how she slowly started coming around more leave something to be desired.

Given how she was portrayed on  Minx Season 1 Episode 1, “The Perils of Being a Wealthy Widow,” I thought we would get to see this progression a little more. Especially since her mission seems to be to back Joyce and oust Doug.

Given that Constance kills Beyond, I have hope that we’re building to a bigger confrontation towards the end of the season.

Starting from the Bottom

In contrast, Bambi’s storyline has been really strong so far this season. Bambi is great at lifting people up and supporting them when they’re going through a tough time. Her parallel conversations with Richie and Joyce are evidence of that.

However, Bambis is also naive enough to think Chief Fun Officer is a legitimate position and when she’s questioned by Rolling Stone, she starts to see that.

This picks up on some of what we saw on “I Thought the Bed Was Gonna Fly” and it’s vindicating to see her march into Doug’s office with the calendar proofs.

There is no question that Bambi can do a lot more at Bottom Dollar and her character can only go up from here.

All the Famous Cameos

In addition to not serving our character arcs to the best of its ability, “It’s Okay to Like It,” is more interested in name-dropping 1970s celebrities. The introduction of Carl Sagan and Annie Liebowitz is distracting to the main plot (if you can even say there is one).

While Annie is mostly a background character and could be considered an easter egg, Carl Sagan takes center stage in a dry performance that feels more annoying than funny.

I can’t say that I hate these cameos, but after last season focused on the Deep Throat screening, I think it’s time to get back to the Minx team and let them shine.

The Tales of Bella LaRouche

It’s good to see Lenny and Shelly so outwardly happy. The reveal that swinging is the key to their happiness and that Shelly is writing about her exploits is far more interesting than Joyce trying to talk to Rolling Stone

Although Shelly’s story is rolled into the episode overall, it is building on a compelling narrative and arc for Shelly that’s been there since the beginning and it’s something that we can comfortably skip six months of and fill in the gaps.

Not to mention, I am getting the feeling that Shelly is poised to take the spotlight from Joyce when it comes to conversations about women and sex. Especially now that she’s found a way to express herself.

Overall, the episode has its highs and lows, and while it definitely has that “minx-y” feel, it’s also drifting away from the point.

It’s not too late to right the ship, and I think that if these storylines pull their threads together and give our characters a little more substance the season can finish strong.
