Hijack Season 1 Episode 3 Review: Draw a Blank

Reviews

Hijack Season 1 Episode 3, “Draw a Blank,” follows Sam and the other passengers on the plane as they work together to determine whether or not the guns the hijackers are using have fake or live rounds in them.

It’s an intriguing mystery, and it’s cool (and stressful) to see all the passengers work together to try to figure this out. Watching them united and working toward a common goal is a lot more entertaining than Sam just trying to get everyone under control. Admittedly, there is some of that happening as well.

When a lot of streaming shows don’t know how to be television shows, opting instead for the “x-hour movie” approach, it’s refreshing to watch a show that understands how television works and how an episode should be structured.

“Draw a Bank” introduces a new element to the hijacking and focuses on exploring it, giving us proof as to whether or not blanks or live rounds are being used. That mystery is wrapped up by the end, and then it also ends on a decent cliffhanger — although, there’s no way Sam has actually been seriously wounded.

Then, on the ground, we slowly start to see our group of investigators come together and start taking this situation seriously.

While on “Draw A Blank” they don’t uncover anything we don’t already know, it is cool to see how they are able to identify the kidnappers. Hopefully, we will start to see the investigators uncover aspects of this hijacking operation that we aren’t aware of yet that will affect how we view the scenes on the plane.

The main concern at this point is how will this saga be stretched out over the course of the remaining four episodes.

It seems like that’s a lot of airtime, which means either the progression is going to really slow down, or we’re in a lot of twists. As long as the twists are realistic and don’t become too much, that route could be tolerable.

However, it’s more likely that the next couple of episodes will just feel like a slow crawl toward whatever is waiting for us in that final episode.

Another option that could help fill time without becoming boring is if the show focused more on following the investigators and everything else that’s happening on the ground. There’s seemingly more to explore there than with the passengers sitting on the plane.

While I don’t think we should completely abandon the passengers for an episode, it would be smart to have the bulk of the time be spent on the ground for an episode or two.

Stray Thoughts
  • I still really don’t care about the family drama. Why we’re following around Sam’s ex-wife as she gives a physics presentation?
  • It’s curious that the hijackers don’t tell their bosses that they started the operation early.

“Draw a Blank” was written by Adam Gyngell, Fred Fernandez Armesto, and George Kay.
