Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Christina Vidal Discuss Their New Series ‘Primo’ [Interview]
Inspired by creator Shea Serrano’s life growing up in San Antonio, TX, the new series Primo on Amazon Freevee follows Rafa Gonzales, a wide-eyed 16-year-old being raised by his clever mother, Drea, and his five overbearing uncles as they live their lives on the southside of San Antonio.
During the ATX TV Festival Opening Night Red Carpet, we caught up with Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Christina Vidal who play Rafa and Drea, respectively, to talk about the new series and what they love most about their characters. (You can watch the full interview below.)

Diaz-Silverio said he was proud about a lot of things when it comes to Primo. To start, he said he was proud to work with Shea Serrano and to be on his first show.
“Also, we have a cast of a lot of people who, it’s their first time as a series regular on a show. And that’s a big point of pride too, that we get to step into these shoes the first time together,” Diaz-Silverio said.

Meanwhile, Vidal said she was most proud of Diaz-Silverio.
“He did such a fantastic job, and he worked his butt off. And he did more work than probably people would know, and that’s why he shows up so great on screen,” she boasted.
“I’m really proud of Drea and having her on screen, because there’s so many women out there like here that are just like, single-handedly holding it down for their families,” Diaz-Silverio said of Vidal’s character.

“We need more single moms on TV. Single moms that are not dysfunctional, sort of chaotic messes. That are the, if anything, the central staple of the family that holds down the chaos.”
In turn, Vidal shared what she loved most about Diaz-Silverio’s character. “I love how Rafa always seems to say the wrong thing, and somehow it’s always the most endearing, charming thing,” Vidal said. “I think that’s my favorite thing about his character.”
