On My Block Spinoff Series ‘Freeridge’ Sets Premiere Date at Netflix
It’s time to go back to Freeridge!
Freeridge, the coming-of-age comedy on Netflix, is a spinoff of On My Block, which streamed for four seasons from 2018 to 2021.
TV Line confirms that Freeridge will premiere on Netflix on Tuesday, February 2, 2023.
Per the logline, Freeridge follows “sibling rivals Gloria and Ines and their friends Demi and Cameron who have unleashed a curse bringing dark misfortune into their lives.”
Gloria, Ines, Demi, and Cameron are Freeridge‘s core four, marking a new core four in the same town as On My Block. The original series’ quartet was Monse, Cesar, Ruby, and Jamal.
The streaming service revealed that the new show’s debut season would consist of eight 30-minute episodes.
Lauren Iungerich serves as showrunner, co-creator, and executive producer on Freeridge, alongside co-creators and executive producers Jamie Uyeshiro, Eddie Gonzalez & Jeremy Haft, and Jamie Dooner.
Iungerich, Gonzalez, and Haft also co-created On My Block.
According to Deadline, Iungerich released a statement about the spinoff series, sharing, “the new core four of Freeridge don’t step into the shoes of our original [On My Block] crew. They step into their own shoes, right alongside the legacy of the kids who came before them.”
“Through the lens of this new group of friends, we’ll see Freeridge as we know it and also explore a Freeridge we haven’t seen before,” Iungerich continued.
That same Deadline report reveals that On My Block stars will return on Freeridge, including Paula Garcés as Geny Martinez, Eric Gutierrez as Ruben Martinez, Eme Ik0wuakor as Dwayne Turner, and Raushanah Simmons as Fran Turner.
So, there’s no denying that Freeridge takes place in not only a shared universe with the original series but the same town.
In November, Variety reported that Peggy Blow, who played Marisol Martinez, aka ‘Abuelita,’ on On My Block would join Freeridge in a new role.
Freeridge stars Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Bryana Salaz, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Ciara Riley Wilson, and Peggy Blow.
