Betty Gabriel and Nina Hoss Talk ‘Jack Ryan’ Season 3 [Interview]

A new season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan means new enemies, new alliances, and new characters to become invested in. Among those joining the cast for Jack Ryan Season 3 are Betty Gabriel as CIA Rome Station Chief Elizabeth Wright and Nina Hoss as Czech President Alena Kovac.

I recently had the chance to chat with Gabriel and Hoss about their roles on the series, what viewers can look forward to this season, and what made the season especially fun to be a part of. (You can watch the full interview below.)

“A lot is being thrown at this woman,” Hoss began, discussing her character Alena Kovak.

“She has to navigate through a lot, especially at the beginning. Something very surprising happens, and very quickly you see someone who thinks she has it all in her hands, and she’s collected and calm and witty, and all of the sudden her whole world, in a way, falls apart. And she has to get a grip and understand very quickly what’s going on and make the right decisions.”

“That was something that drew me to this character,” Hoss continued. “It was so much to explore with her, and to see what kind of instincts you have to have as a politician also too. To be able to know whom to trust and whom not to trust, and how do we get to make these very important decisions that have such an impact on a lot of people, if not the world. So the stakes are very high.”

“Yes, the stakes are very high as well for my character,” Gabriel said of Elizabeth Wright. “She’s the Chief of Station in Rome for the CIA. She’s Jack’s boss.”

“They’re very different if you will,” Gabriel laughed. “She’s a very gut-instinct-oriented person,” she added, hinting at some tension between her character and that of Jack Ryan.

“Throughout the season you see things shift and you see the kind of pressure that she’s under and how she’s being put in the hot seat, which I really was drawn to,” Gabriel continued. “And I think that’s something I can definitely tap into, you know being this person in a predominantly homogenous white male organization.”

Both Hoss and Gabriel also talked about how much fun it was to be a part of the series, and how thrilling Jack Ryan Season 3 promises to be.

Though Gabriel said she filmed most of her scenes in the studio, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t part of the action. “Within all these intimate scenes, you have this large-scale geo-hopping adventure that’s really exciting,” Gabriel said.

“It’s really fun on a personal level, as an actress to be able to do all these things,” Hoss said of her role. “To combine highly intellectual intelligent kind of person with someone who is a badass also, in so many ways.”
