The Conners Season 5 Episode 5 Review: A Little Weed and a Bad Seed

Reviews, The Conners

For the first time, probably ever, the Conner family really brings the laughs and shenanigans. The Conners Season 5 Episode 5, “A Little Weed and a Bad Seed,” is all about alternative medicine and defining your stance as a female.

Even the more serious moments of the show manage to bring a slight chuckle out of us for how ridiculous the characters are acting or reacting. Honestly, the only straight man in this episode is Harris — who is simply there to bring some calm to the chaos around her.

Watching Becky evolve as a mother over the course of this show has been a joy. “A Little Weed and a Bad Seed” is no different, in fact, I feel it shows the most growth from her so far.

While it is always frustrating to see the Conner sisters fight knowing that this one is centered on their own differing views of school really helps. Becky isn’t the same type of student as Darlene and neither of them is wrong.

There is a fine line between what Darlene thinks Beverly Rose should do and what Becky thinks. This line isn’t easy to find the middle ground on, but I do think that this episode manages to nail it on the head.

The devastation on Becky’s face when she picks up Beverly Rose and sees how small and quiet she has become will break any fellow parent’s heart. However, hearing the teacher say that Beverly Rose did a great job by quietly participating is even more heartbreaking.

I’m extremely glad that Becky channeled a bit of her mother at that moment and stands up to that kindergarten teacher. Females already have to fight for a place in the patriarchal society they don’t need it from other females.

Dan has a hurt shoulder and his usual methods of pain relief aren’t working. Granted, he is getting old, but you still have sympathy for his discomfort.

Honestly, his scenes with the pot dispensary and then the subsequent edible side effects is the best writing this show has had in a very long time. It was reminiscent of the episode of Roseanne when they all found that pot in the bathroom and proceeded to get very high.

If you weren’t bent over laughing at his confusion over why his feet wouldn’t move correctly or his comfort in the screensaver “show” then I’m not sure this show is your brand of funny. It’s the type of humor that this family is famous for, but has been seriously lacking for a long time.

I have been saying for a while now that Dan deserves to have more of his own stories instead of being an afterthought to everyone else’s. This episode more than makes up for it, but I hope the show keeps this momentum going.

I especially hope it chooses to revisit the growing their own pot business idea Harris came up with. That is bound to be hilarious and heartwarming.
