Vampire Academy Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Molnija

Reviews, Vampire Academy

Vampire Academy Season 1 Episode 6, “Molnija,” finds some of our characters out on the Royal Tour, attending parties and getting attacked by Strigoi.

You’d think that this would be an intense episode with a Strigoi attack and all, but it’s a much more calm and quiet episode compared to Vampire Academy Season 1 Episode 5, “Near Guard, Far Guard.”

The focus is more on exploring more reasons why people are discontent with the way the council and the Queen govern. We’ve seen Lissa and Rose discuss their own issues with how things are run, but now we are expanding the scope and seeing just how widespread this sentiment runs.

It’s a step the series needed to take.

We’ve been told since the very beginning of the season that we’d see Rose and Lissa at the center of a revolution, and Vampire Academy has done a good job explaining why each of them would want things to change. However, it takes more than two people for a revolution to happen.

“Molnija” shows how easily this world could turn on those in charge in favor of someone who supports a more fair rule for all the citizens, not just the Moroi royalty.

Lissa manages to meet her mystery art collector, Adrian, and he’s much more than she could’ve imagined — he’s a spirit user who appears to be in control of his powers.

We don’t know the extent of his struggle with the darkness, and it’ll be interesting to see how he handles his magic compared to Sonya.

We’ve only had Sonya as a gauge of how Lissa’s future could turn out, but Adrian could present another option for Lissa. Perhaps he will show us that it’s possible for her to be in control and not in danger of the darkness.

Hopefully, Adrian will also allow Lissa to open up about her connection with Rose and give us some answers in the process. I’m ready to learn something, anything about what’s going on there. This mystery has dragged on a bit too long.

Christian and Mia spending time together is an unexpected development, but they are an entertaining pair.

Christian is actually able to talk more openly about things with Lissa, and we haven’t really seen Mia get a chance to be vulnerable with anyone yet. You come away from this episode liking both characters a bit more. I’d even love to see more of their friendship in future episodes.

Through their scenes, we also get more of a sense of how Christian’s more advanced with his magic compared to others his age. Prior to this episode, we only had Lissa to really compare him to, and she’s not the best benchmark as far as magic use goes.

Now it’s clear that Christian is a bit of an anomaly with how far he’s progressed with his magic. There’s still so much we don’t know about how magic works in this world, and future training sessions with Mia could be an interesting way to continue to learn more about it.

Stray Thoughts
  • I think we should’ve let Sonya attack Tatiana. She had it coming.
  • Dimitri and Rose finally kissing brings me so much joy.
  • Sonya and Lissa’s Royal Tour outfits are amazing.
  • I love that we see Rose and Sonya grieving Mikhail.
  • Sasha and Rose’s foot bump is so sweet and heartbreaking.
  • Victor is going to need to step up his campaigning. Maybe, he should invest in some flashy buttons.
  • While I feel bad for Jesse, I also need him to be less of an absolute asshole.
