What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 Episode 6 Review: The Wedding

Reviews, What We Do in the Shadows

What We Do in the Shadows Season 4 Episode 6, “The Wedding,” gives us the wedding of the century, bursting with biting hilarity, a stunning transformation, and plenty of heartwarming Nandermo moments. It’s more introspective and emotionally resonant than last week’s outing, but it’s still as laugh-inducing as ever.

The return of Doug Jones as Baron Afanas is a delight and makes perfect sense given the occasion. It’s lovely to see Jones’s actual visage since the character actor usually disappears physically into his roles.

NADJA: Guillermo, did you kick five holes in the wall and then f*ck a chicken?

The ’80s homage to makeover montages is the cherry atop an already perfect What We Do in the Shadows sundae. Who knew watching Baron, Nadja, The Guide, and The Sire lay in a circle and laugh while in a clothing store would be the cure for what collectively ails us?

“The Wedding” hosts a bevy of other fun twists, including the return of Derek, the lonely vampire, Seanie (said in Laszlo’s typical cadence), Charmaine, and everyone’s favorite Human Music Group. It’s an exciting way of melding together different aspects of the What We Do in the Shadows universe.

All the razor-sharp humor and rip-roaring antics aside, Nandor and Guillermo’s bond is the beating heart of “The Wedding.” Nandermo has evolved significantly since the pilot episode. This show does a brilliant job of methodically laying the foundation of their blossoming relationship.

NANDOR: They had a prior engagement of being very dead.

The writers are adept at providing enough subtle clues and injecting nuance into Nandor and Guillermo’s relationship so that it doesn’t feel like they’re teasing us. It doesn’t smack of misdirection or queerbaiting. Instead, it seems like the writers are building toward an explosive, heart-melting Nandermo union. They don’t underestimate the fans and their intelligence; we’re smart enough to pick up on said clues.

Nandor spends most of the episode projecting his feelings onto other people and claims they wish to sabotage his impending nuptials. It’s heartbreaking to see him deny his feelings for Guillermo and vice versa. Even Nandor’s vampire friends understand that marrying Marwa is a no-no.

Despite the emotional upheaval for Nandermo fans, “The Wedding” is a joyous, vibrant episode in the What We Do in the Shadows canon. It’s refreshing to watch a series wherein nobody is strictly straight. Love is love, baby!

THE GUIDE: With all due respect, you are being a real bridezilla. It’s like a combination of a bride and a Godzilla.

“The Wedding” follows hot on the heels of the show’s inarguably strongest outing (“Private School”), so it’s challenging to gauge it by that metric. However, it boasts witty moments, top-tier performances from Kayvan Novak and Harvey Guillén, and an aura that feels akin to a warm hug from a bunch of sexy vampires. It gets four BAAATS!

Stray Observations:

  • Nandermo fans, let’s ruminate extensively on the fact that Marwa kissed Guillermo after Nandor wished for Marwa to “like” what he likes. Well, if those kisses are anything to go by, it’s abundantly clear Nandor loves Guillermo.
  • Laszlo getting all horned up for Baron Afanas at the wedding is hysterical. Horny Laszlo is always a good-time Charlie.
  • That ’80s montage with Baron, The Sire, The Guide, and Nadja might be one of this reviewer’s favorite TV montages. The Baron looked exceptionally stylish in that gorgeous pink frock. It’s an instant serotonin boost.
  • The Human Music Group’s song about Nandor and Marwa’s lovemaking should top the pop charts. They need to release an album featuring Matt Berry and Natasia Demetriou singing The HMG’s greatest hits.
  • Since Nandor always thinks about Guillermo when he uses his member, it’s safe to assume Nandor will be, uh, “coming” before Marwa on their wedding night.
  • Nandor abandoned the “six black stallions pulling a wedding cake” idea? For shame! He must be saving it for his and Guillermo’s wedding.
