Tom Swift Season 1 Episode 10 Review: …And the Cost of Forgiveness

Reviews, Tom Swift

And just like that an explosive first, and only, season of Tom Swift comes to a close. If fans are hoping that Tom Swift Season 1 Episode 10, “…And the Cost of Forgiveness,” will provide them with all the answers they desire they will be disappointed.

However, this comes because of the show’s obviously unexpected cancellation. It’s clear that the writers wanted more time with this story and these characters.

What a shame, because it feels as though it finally hit its stride just as it is ending.

Tom’s Mixed Feelings

One of the biggest residuals from the previous episode is Tom’s feelings about what he’s found out regarding his father. No one wants to uncover a long suppressed childhood trauma, especially not someone who is on a quest to save the perpetrator in question.

Tom is never one to really process his feelings in a healthy way so naturally, Barclay starts off giving him advice on how to cheer up in ways that only Tom would find helpful. It doesn’t make sense, but then again a lot of how Tom processes big feelings rarely does.

It’s the strength Tom finds within himself to get back into his big thinker mindset that is truly worth noting about “…And the Cost of Forgiveness.” He manages to pull himself together when he realizes that the ones he does love and respect are in danger of some unknown Susannah Robb plot at the company event, SwiftSights.

He may not be ready to face the mission of saving his father just yet, but Tom is in fighting mode when it comes to saving all 200 Black Entrepreneurs at his event. All season long, Tom Swift has been working tirelessly to show viewers a journey of growth for Tom.

This moment is the culmination of it all. Tom is able to stand tall in front of his company and take charge like any leader would. His actions are inspiring and don’t go unnoticed by Lorraine.

It’s her speech to Tom about finding mercy and grace within him that really turns the tide of this episode. Tom is finally convinced to continue his mission of saving his father — even though it’s at the expense of Barclay.

Lorraine’s Woes

Tom isn’t the only one fighting off an adversary. While he is trying to expose Susannah in the biggest way, Lorraine is discovering just how much she underestimated Claire.

Viewers have known for some time that Claire has been using the lip balm to manipulate Lorraine. However, we haven’t quite figured out why — until now.

Claire isn’t going to go quietly into the night when Lorraine threatens to fire her. No, this woman has the biggest piece of blackmail up her sleeve.

It’s crazy to think she has been using this manipulation tool this whole time, not to gain access to Swift Enterprises in a more permanent way. But, to collect anecdotes to be used later on for blackmail.

Claire is aware of the power she now holds and based on this current behavior I wouldn’t be surprised if now is the time she makes her power move within the company. Too bad we don’t get more time to see if Lorraine will throw this blackmail back in her face or if Claire will gain the upper hand after all.

The Mystery of Rowen Answered

If there is anything fantastic gained from this ending its that Rowen’s mysteriousness is finally explained. When he prevents Tom from properly saving his father, he sets in motion the events of 2096 from whence he came.

This tells us all that Rowen’s existence in the current timeline is because of Barton in the future. All of this becomes messy and inconclusive real fast, but the fact remains that Rowen being from the future is a satisfying reveal.

It explains so much — why he is seemingly wishy washy and why he’s adamant about being in the know about everything going on with Tom’s mission. It also explains how he comes to have one of the capsule pieces.

Going back to the beginning of the season, armed with this knowledge should be a fun experience for anyone who wishes to do so. Imagine all the other clues we can discover just by watching from the lens of Rowen being from the future.
