Preview — Black Bird: Apple TV+ Takes on True Crime

Black Bird, Previews

Fascination with true crime isn’t going anywhere, and the upcoming release of Black Bird on Apple TV+ is among the latest to capitalize on this trend.

Based on James Keene’s memoir, In With the Devil, Black Bird will offer a unique approach to true-crime drama as the story follows a convicted criminal who becomes an integral part of solving a crime.

Those not sold on the true-crime genre may well find something in Black Bird to love, and true-crime fans may find something new to discover.

Already it’s clear that Black Bird has the capacity to be an enthralling psychological thriller, probing deep into the mind of a serial killer. In a miniseries, the limited time means that the clock is ticking.

It will be interesting to see how closely Black Bird sticks to the source material versus how much it becomes it’s own thing. It could absolutely go either way.

Taron Edgerton has really been playing the long game and setting us up for his leading man era. I, for one, welcome it with open arms.

In a year that’s been characterized by stories of scammers, wheelers, and dealers, Apple TV+ has a chance to shine with Black Bird. Between the story and the cast, there’s a lot of potential here.

Let’s see what Black Bird can do.

Series description: Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero and decorated policeman’s son Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum-security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime — enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by enlisting the help of the very people put behind bars to solve its mysteries.
