Julia Review: Foie Gras (Season 1 Episode 7)

Reviews

With every great figure, there come quite a few haters.

Julia Season 1 Episode 7, “Foie Gras,” showcases people who didn’t subscribe to the cult of Julia Child. The first seven episodes create a very welcoming and loving space for Julia (Sarah Lancashire).

Her best friends, husband, and crew that adore her all help make The French Chef a success, so she’s been able to shield herself from those who hate her program.

Even Russ (Fran Kranz), who had objections to the show at first, has now warmed to it. In “Foie Gras,” Julia manages to show women who oppose Julia’s form of housewife liberation without completely making them the villains.

Blanche (Judith Light) doesn’t hate Julia. She fears her influence on Judith (Fiona Glascott). She also, like many at that time, fail to see the potential in the world of television.

Betty Friedan (Tracee Chimo Pallero) sees Julia as a barrier that may stop the female revolution. This is another scene that I really wonder if it happened, but I also don’t care.

Tracee Chimo Pallero and Sarah Lancashire are electrifying in this scene. The subtle transition from casual conversation to classy arguing is top-notch acting.

Despite Friedan’s objections to Julia’s show, no one can deny its influence and power. Julia’s speech towards the end of the episode really helps drive this message home.

The French Chef allows families to experience the beauty of travel with their food.

The fake celebrity cameos in Julia are becoming one of my favorite parts of the show. When the Fred Rogers (Rob McClure) makes a cameo at the end of the episode, it is a truly delightful and unexpected moment. Hopefully, Mister Rogers makes another appearance in the Julia season finale next week.

While Julia didn’t feel the love from a few people on “Foie Gras,” Alice (Brittany Bradford) finally receives some romantic attention.

Suddenly Julia became a romantic drama, and the show is better for it. Issac (Tosin Morohunfola) and Alice’s scenes are really enjoyable to watch because their chemistry from the start captivates the viewers.

Alice’s career has been the focus for the past six episodes, so it’s nice to see a bit of a shift in her personal life. It shows that she can have it all, career success, and passionate love life.

Russ’s awakening also continues on this episode. Hearing him tell Betty Friedan that she fails to understand Julia makes it clear that he’s finally seeing her as well.

One of the episode’s funniest moments is Russ meeting a serious documentary filmmaker and her fangirling when she finds out Russ works with Julia.

People fangirling about Julia to Russ is by far one of my favorite ongoing gags.

Julia Season 1 Episode 7 - Bebe Neuwirth and David Hyde Pierce

Frasier fans keep getting fun moments between David Hyde Pierce and Bebe Neuwirth. Paul and Avis are becoming one of the show’s best duos.

The fate of Julia is still unknown as HBO Max has yet to cancel or renew it for Season 2. Next Thursday, the season (or series) finale streams.

Julia uses “Foie Gras“ to introduce a few new storylines, so it’ll be interesting to see how they play into the finale. Hopefully, things for Julia and the crew continue to develop in a potential season two.

Jerrica Tisdale is your favorite neighborhood pop culture junkie. She will annoy you with random TV and film facts, while complaining about whatever is the hottest new book. She has been a TV fan all her life but writing about it for over a decade. You may find her work all over the internet especially reality TV rants. She is a senior writer at Tell-Tale TV.

  • Anyone else spot the blooper?

When Julia arrives at the Gala, her producer Russ Morash compliments her on the dress she is wearing and Julia says “Thank you France” (The actors name is Fran[cis] Kranz. Oops!)
