iCarly: Nathan Kress, Laci Mosley, and Jaidyn Triplett Talk Nostalgic Sets and Season 2 Dynamics [Interview]

iCarly, Interviews, Video

Cult-comedy iCarly aired from 2007 to 2012 on Nickelodeon, dominating teen culture and becoming a memorable notch in the network’s early 2000s reign. The sitcom was highly regarded for its zany humor and honest takes on internet fame.

The internet may have changed, but fans’ love for the odd-ball series has not. Thus iCarly was revived, sporting a sleeker studio and a satire that afforded Carly and Freddie the explicit conversations their messy adult lives deserved.

Season 1 witnesses the return of Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor, and Nathan Kress with the addition of Laci Mosley and Jaidyn Triplett. Together they delivered promising new dynamics while keeping the chaotic spirit of the original alive.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with iCarly‘s Nathan Kress, Laci Mosley, and Jaidyn Triplett on the nostalgia of the show’s iconic sets and new dynamics fans can expect from Season 2. (You can watch the full video of our interview below.)

Each cast member had a different experience walking onto the updated set of Spencer’s eclectic apartment for the first time. For Kress, who played Freddie Benson in the original series, the familiar sight reflected his hopes for the revival.

“I was lost — I walked out and froze for a little while. I was like, ‘I know where I am, but this is vastly different from what it looked like,’ and I started questioning, maybe I wasn’t remembering it right,” he recalled.

“I feel like that moment distilled what I had hoped the iCarly experience revival experience would be for the viewers, is seeing something that you know and that you’re familiar with, but that is so fresh, different, and expanded. You know you feel comfortable there, but you’re going to experience a lot of things that you didn’t get to before. So that whole thing gave me this shot of excitement that carried through.”

For Mosley, who plays Harper, an inspiring fashion designer and friend from Carly’s college years, experiencing the moment as someone who grew up a fan of the show was “surreal.”

“Speaking as someone who watched iCarly and is around the same age as Nathan and Miranda, it was a wild experience to go from watching something on television as a preteen/teenager to walking onto that same set,” she explained.

“It feels like you are in a dream. I always knew I wanted to act, but never in a million years did I think I would get to appear on iconic sets that I used to watch on television as a child. Now I’m here working, hiding my sodas and waters behind the sets. I’m like fully living there now.”

iCarly was once a show about young teens trying to find their way in a world of rapidly developing technology. Now that responsibility falls on young Triplett’s Millicent to keep Carly up on the latest internet trends.

Unlike her castmates, Triplett did not grow up alongside this show when it aired. But like most viewers these days, she eventually discovered the comedy series through streaming and at the perfect time in her career.

“I was watching the show about a week before I got the audition, so I was binging throughout the entire process and then walking onto the set. Even with the changes, I could still see Spencer’s apartment, and I was like, ‘I’m really here!’ Triplett said, recalling her first time on the iconic set.

“I’m sitting here looking at Spencer’s plastic bottle robot and all this stuff. So it was a really cool experience knowing that what I just watched on TV is now my reality.”
