The Republic of Sarah Review: The Last Rabbit (Season 1 Episode 13)
It’s our final visit to Greylock on The Republic of Sarah Season 1 Episode 13, “The Last Rabbit.”
We cannot only blame its summer premiere time for its demise. The Republic of Sarah has struggled to find its way this season, as our heroine has struggled to run a new country she never explicitly asked to run.
If the TV business were all about the art of storytelling The Republic of Sarah definitely deserves another chance at life. But if it has to go out, it may as well go out perfectly.

None of our ships could end with a traditional happily ever after. The Republic of Sarah simply did not have time for that. But since the story is officially over, we are allowed to imply a “happily ever almost” for both Sarah and Grover and Danny and Corinne.
What’s more? The path that gets us there makes complete sense.
Corinne and Danny have a co-parenting journey ahead of them off-screen. It’s not going to be easy, but they know feelings exist between both of them because they both kept the skeleton decorations from their sexy night.
Sarah and Grover arguably have something messier to figure out as far as their feelings are concerned. But the look on Sarah’s face when she remembers what she did with Grover last night is priceless.
We don’t see anything romantic happen on-screen, so you could argue that we don’t know what happened. I’m choosing to believe that I know. (Plus, I love that we don’t see anything).

It’s not going to be easy for Sarah and Grover to navigate their true feelings for each other. Grover’s visit to Patience’s grave to announce that he’s going to be okay is beautiful and earned — but grief never just disappears. When someone we love dies, we are never just magically healed.
But the scene between Grover and Sarah at the concert perfectly exemplifies why they will work as best friends and lovers off-screen.
Grover pushes Sarah to forgive herself for the mistakes she has made as a leader and a friend. Sarah has a lot of work to do, but Grover is absolutely right that AJ and Corinne have also made huge mistakes.
Life is about many things, and one of them is redemption. Grover knows that Sarah deserves to see her own.
By turning himself in to help Greylock become a country that is completely recognized by the U.S., Paul has proved to his daughter that redemption is possible.

It’s sad that Doris has to die for Sarah to fully understand how urgent it is that Greylock is respected — but the possibly unnecessary death of a beloved resident is a logical path to take to get her there.
The Republic of Sarah has always been smart. We know Doris just enough that her death matters to us, too. But not enough that our sadness lingers for too long.
Danny’s relationship with Ellen is the biggest storyline left untied and there is no reason to speculate about a future reconciliation. It makes so much sense that a story about physical abuse would be unresolved.
Overall, The Republic of Sarah leaves us on a perfectly balanced note. I want to know more, but I’m also perfectly satisfied answering all of my questions with the knowledge I’ve been given.
Shows that know they are definitely ending rarely achieve such a satisfying final chapter. Congratulations, The Republic of Sarah. Like Greylock, you have earned your place, even though you haven’t been allowed to occupy it for long.
