The Lost Symbol Review: Murmuration (Season 1 Episode 3)

Reviews, The Lost Symbol

Katherine and Langdon ignore Mal’akh’s warning on Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol Season 1 Episode 3, “Murmuration,” and Katherine’s lab tech pays the price for it. Life lesson: don’t leave your drink unattended, even if you feel like you can trust this stranger you just met.

As awful as it is to say, we needed to see Mal’akh follow up on his threats.

He’s been violent before, and he’s clearly not a good dude, but Katherine and Langdon need to realize that Mal’akh is serious. Peter’s life isn’t the only one that could be in jeopardy here.

All that being said, here’s hoping Katherine continues to disregard Mal’akh and assist Langdon on this journey because he can’t do this without her. Okay, maybe Langdon could, but he would definitely be dead/unconscious if it weren’t for her forcing him to try to escape at the cemetery.

I’ve said it before, but Katherine is Langdon’s tether to reality when he starts to spiral, trying to solve the latest puzzle. She helps get him out of his head, which either saves his life or helps him to crack a code.

If Katherine does finally heed Mal’akh’s warning, then she could still work the case without being by Langdon’s side. There are a variety of different investigations happening, so she could step away from Langdon to focus on figuring out what Sato is up to or helping Nunez.

When Nunez was first introduced during The Lost Symbol Season 1 Episode 1, “As Above, So Below,” I figured he would never be seen again, despite how great he was. The Lost Symbol does the smart and unexpected thing and finds a way to keep Nunez around.

Once again, he’s a great source of comedy during “Murmuration,” and we start to see him working a different angle of the investigation. It’s one that, as he points out, the CIA should be focusing on — discovering the identity of the shooter at the Capitol.

But, I suppose you could argue that it would be more FBI or Capitol Police jurisdiction rather than the CIA, but hey, that’s why Nunez is going to jump in and get the search started. It’s an important piece of the puzzle, and if Nunez makes any headway, he’ll end up helping Katherine and Langdon by taking out the people pressuring and threatening them.

We’ve spent enough time with Nunez to make us care about him — or potentially fall in love with him — so we’re invested enough to follow him around if he branches out on his own. He’ll definitely be more entertaining to watch than whatever strange torture Peter is enduring.

Stray Thoughts
  • It will be interesting if Sato is true to her word about not caring about the portal.
  • How many disguises does Mal’akh have in his closet?
  • The suspense is fantastic when Katherine and Langdon are at the cemetery.
