Turner & Hooch Review: The Fur-gitive (Season 1 Episode 6)

Reviews, Turner & Hooch

Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 6, “The Fur-gitive,” finally steps it up in the romance department, allowing Scott to get his head out of his ass and have some chemistry with Erica. I may have started cheering.

The issue with the love triangle up until now is that we haven’t actually seen Scott have chemistry with either Brooke or Erica. Thankfully, Scott has some great moments with Erica during this episode. He teases her and is comfortable enough to loosen up around her.

We see him actually joking around and not just talking about a work issue he’s desperately trying to solve. It’s great to see another side of Scott and witness him realizing he has a crush on Erica.

When he’s dancing with Brooke and flashes back to his dance with Erica? That’s some rom-com perfection right there, and I want more of it.

It’s hard to make a case that he should be with Brooke because we haven’t really seen either of them in crush mode. We’ve seen Erica try to reign in her feelings around Scott, but aside from showing up to do things with Scott’s family and bathing Hooch, there haven’t been any signs that Brooke has feelings for him.

Their current relationship seems to be based on the fact that they dated before, so they have that familiarity with each other. But, we have yet to see any sparks fly. Maybe, the show is leaning towards Scott deciding the same thing, which I think would be a mature decision for him to reach.

Case of the week-wise, Turner & Hooch has evolved beyond the case centering around Hooch and his screw-ups (or Scott’s inability to understand what Hooch is trying to say), and it’s refreshing. The show is proving that it can grow into something beyond Scott and Hooch having issues and that there’s a lot of material for it to work with.

Turner & Hooch will never be an intensely dramatic or popular water cooler show, but it is consistently entertaining and light-hearted. It could use some work on some things, like the investigative angle and making the season-long arc/mystery a bit more engaging, but you can count on it being enjoyable. It’s dependable that way, and there’s merit in that.

“The Fur-gitive” focuses more on the office dynamics, bringing back everyone’s least favorite U.S. Marshal, Trent, who now for some reason wants to be called Big Dog. Is he secretly jealous of Hooch or something?

This time around, Trent’s target is Xavier, who proves that he has been around long enough to know how to handle jerks like Trent. It’s amusing watching Trent get agitated at how nonplussed Xavier is by him and his awful assignments.

Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 6 progresses the relationship between Xavier and Scott. Not only does Scott learn from Xavier, but he spends the case sticking up for him and supporting him. These two have come a long way, and it’s wonderful to see Scott realizing how valuable of an asset Xavier is to the team.

Whenever Jessica is off desk duty, I’d love to see the three of them team up on cases. They would tease Scott so much, and I would love watching every minute of it.

Stray Thoughts
  • We needed more of Hooch in his avocado costume.
  • Scott reacting to Laura’s illegal search and investigation is a good source of entertainment.
  • I’d be okay with Xavier and Scott ballroom dancing during an episode.
  • Jessica teasing Trent about his new call sign proves that she is delightful no matter how little she’s on-screen.
  • I’m all for Hooch making a new dog friend every week.
  • Laura really needs to develop some self-preservation skills and a much better poker face.
