The Bold Type Review: I Expect You To Have Adventures (Season 5 Episode 6)

Reviews, The Bold Type

The old adage, “save the best for last” exists for a reason. The Bold Type Season 5 Episode 6, “I Expect You To Have Adventures,” proves as much.

It’s a shame that The Bold Type sets the bar so low with such few chances in its final season. So that begs the question — does the “perfect” ending make up for all previous disappointments?

My answer is no. As much as I love Sutton Brady and Richard Hunter together, as much as I used to believe their marriage could have been salvaged — groundwork should have been laid to make their reunion more realistic.

Sure, there are clues throughout the season that this is where we are heading. Richard can’t face Sutton to serve her divorce papers because he does not want the divorce.

But sex does not make a marriage. Neither does a constant magnetic attraction. Richard has created more issues within his marriage because he left. An apology and a promise that he will not resent Sutton for not wanting to be a mother is not enough to save them.

Per Variety, we now know that the reunion is hasty because it is a last-minute change — it’s still hard to excuse the sloppy.

It’s too bad that this is our final goodbye because I’m interested in watching them do the work to save their marriage. I just refuse to believe this is their happily ever after.

As it stands, Richard is just lucky that Sutton loves love — she is well within her rights to leave him.

The Bold Type makes the right decision where the editor-in-chief of Scarlet is concerned. I should have seen the constant references to Jane as editor-in-chief as the red herrings they are.

The reason I didn’t is that I don’t trust The Bold Type to do Kat right based on its recent past.

Does naming Kat Edison editor-in-chief of Scarlet erase The Bold Type‘s recent white feminist slant? No.

Does it make any sense at all? No.

Is it an example of good storytelling? No.

Kat is a social media manager whose time on-screen has been wasted for a very long time. Her fate is a quick fix so The Bold Type can say the end is all that matters.

This is another reason why it’s a shame that we will no longer be spending time with the bold three. Watching a young, bisexual Black woman navigate challenges as the head of a magazine is where the real story is.

Let’s not forget that no matter how we slice it, Kat is Jaqueline’s second choice and has never received the attention or level of respect at Scarlet that Jane has.

A band-aid can’t erase the fact that she is sloppy seconds and it’s not a good look that Jane has to say no and suggest Kat for Jaqueline to make the bold choice.

Please don’t mistake my honest criticism for hatred of the episode. It delivers the nostalgia and callbacks that we have deserved all season.

The best one is the cold open in which the ladies are wearing jackets that correspond with the colors of their dresses in the series premiere. Screaming into the subway would have been nice, but on the street as a bus goes by works, too.

I wish that the violinist in the promo photos of Kadena’s final scene made the final cut, but I like knowing that he was there at all.

What is there to even say about the fashion closet? It’s absolutely iconic and we all know why without even needing the words to describe it.

Jane’s final decision to leave Scarlet and write a book makes so much more sense than leading a feminist vertical at a feminist magazine. Plus, she has forever been motivated by her mother and is less annoying when she is.

Kadena deserves a more spectacular happily ever after, but I’m glad they have one at all. Nothing else makes sense for Kat.

I don’t even begrudge Sutton for choosing to love Richard too much when I’m thinking as just a fan.

Overall, we can’t deny that we deserve a better final season.

But based on “I Expect You To Have Adventures” alone, I take a deep breath with the bold three in the fashion closet, raise an actual glass of champagne to them, say “thank you,” and let go of my own safety net with a smile on my face.
