Grown-ish Review: Ugh, Those Feels Again (Season 4 Episode 1)

Grown-ish, Reviews

As the final stretch of summer is coming to an end on Grown-ish Season 4 Episode 1, “Ugh, Those Feels Again,” Zoey has a group vacation planned for everyone to celebrate and party together as a last hoorah before senior year.

And where better than Mexico?

She’s only been back at school a short time, but what she doesn’t realize is how much everything and everyone has changed. Their lives no longer resemble the same carefree abandon they did in freshman year.

Nomi is a single mother, Jazz and Doug are still fighting over their breakup, and, well, Vivek’s still the same — enjoying his numbered days while his lawyer is working to stave off jail time for his recent drug dealing offense.

In this slightly sleepy Season 4 Premiere, the drama certainly heightens in preparation for future oh-nos.

Understandably, a season premiere can’t be that exciting as it’s lining up the drama, but the only exciting part of this premiere is the beautiful location of Mexico.

Just as the group arrives and reunites at the very beautiful resort, things seem normal. Zoey announces her master itinerary, however, nobody else seems as enthused.

The girls tell her that they had been hoping for a “you-do-you” type vacation, whatever that means. If you’re going on a group vacation, no way you’re in for a solo trip.

Things blow up when the group tries to play an innocent game of “who’s most likely to.” And finally, Zoey sees that while she’s been trying to plan a trip of a lifetime, what she’s been missing out on is her chance to finally build her relationship with Aaron.

Since day one, the two have had an on-again, off-again relationship. But now, it looks like they’re ready to give it their all.

With their relationship starting off on a questionable foot, (cheating on Aaron’s ex-girlfriend together) the two are trying to focus on the fact that they’re finally together.

During their party date with one too many drinks, they sneak off and get married. Seeing as every drunken marriage seems to end in an annulment, hopefully, theirs does too.

They’re seniors in college who have barely had a healthy relationship. There’s no way their sober selves are going to be too happy about that decision. And Dre will certainly not have his favorite daughter getting married without him there to walk her down the aisle.

Plus, they’re now in jail, after getting caught during their sexy public beach rendezvous. That does not bode well for a smooth drama-free relationship.

Meanwhile, Ana’s reeling in her devastation about Javier cheating on her, despite his pleas that his STD was from before he went celibate and before he met her.

Although, chlamydia supposedly goes away within one to two weeks, so can we really trust him? Also, the fact that his texts are with a contact named “somebody.” All the signs are a bit iffy.

But, as long as their blow-up brought Ana and Nomi back together after their tiff, that’s all that matters.

It looks like they’ll be in paradise for at least another episode, seeing as Aaron and Zoey are in a Mexican jail, but will their relationship still be in metaphorical paradise after their night?

Stray Musings:
  • How old is Javier really if he uses a tablet to take photos and to text! Yikes.
  • Thank you, Vivek! Having melanin doesn’t protect you from skin cancer. Dispel the myth that POC don’t need sunscreen. Lather up, people!
  • There’s no way Ana needs to Facetune her legs. That’s something straight out of Shrill. If you know, you know.
