Wynonna Earp Series Finale Review: Old Souls (Season 4 Episode 12)

Reviews, Wynonna Earp

Well, that’s it. Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 12, “Old Souls,” is the very last episode of Wynonna Earp, and it’s the perfect ending for this delightful and wacky show.

This final season hasn’t been perfect, and the long hiatus between the first and second half of the season did not help things. There was some fear that maybe we wouldn’t get the ending this show deserves, but thankfully, that’s not the case.

Everyone gets a fitting ending that sets them up with a hopeful future. “Old Souls” is the dose of happiness that we all desperately need and a reminder that true love prevails and happy endings do happen.

There’s a lot of doom and gloom in the world and on television these days, and Wynonna Earp certainly has put our hearts through the wringer multiple times. This makes the decision to have the final hour be full of hope and love a lot more impactful.

The show could have easily decided to go a darker route, focusing on how there’ll always be a fight and danger on the horizon. Instead, we can all rest easy knowing that our beloved characters are safe and happy.

Because Wynonna Earp has always been a show that welcomes you, makes you feel loved and supported, and wants to leave you with a smile on your face and hope in your heart. And that’s why we love it so.

The cursed dress is a fun complication to add to the mix, and it’s not surprising that a wedding dress has wreaked havoc in Purgatory for years. The vintage shop is called Cursey’s, which is so wonderfully on the nose.

The best part about this storyline is that Waverly saves the day. Her historical research makes a re-appearance, and she busts in to defeat the silk witch after Doc and Wynonna had epically failed to do so.

It’s further proof, not that we needed any more, that Purgatory is in good hands. Nicole and Waverly can tackle whatever problems that come up, just like how they solved the mystery of what happened at the homestead without Wynonna’s help.

While the focus of the hour is the beautiful Wayhaught wedding, everyone trying to help Wynonna get her head out of her ass is fantastic and adds a great dose of levity to the finale.

Between Jeremy trying to process how Wynonna could’ve said not to Doc — was he not wearing his hat?! — to everyone cheering as Wynonna decides to run after him, is perfection. There’s no other word for it.

Those scenes remind us that in addition to making us bawl our eyes out, this is our family that we’ve all grown to love. That’s another thing the finale does so well. It gives us time with everyone in this finale, and all the relationships we love, platonic and romantic, are highlighted and given their due.

There aren’t enough words I can say about the Earp sisters. They’ve always held a special place in my heart, and they have so many great moments during “Old Souls.”

The fact that Waverly drags Wynonna by her ear to force her to leave with Doc says just about everything you need to know about their relationship. She really is the only one who could get through to Wynonna, and I love that it happens when it is just the two of them.

This moment could have easily happened outside with everyone, but instead, it happens when the only people in the room are Wynonna and Waverly. It’s a fantastic final scene for them.

Thank you, Wynonna Earp, for bringing this family into all of our lives, and leaving us with this beautiful episode filled with love and hope. You’ll never be forgotten.

Stray Thoughts
  • All the chairs set aside for loved ones is such a sweet touch.
  • Who knew a mailbox could make you so emotional?
  • Nicole asking Nedley to walk her down the aisle absolutely destroyed me.
  • Doc on TikTok is a hilariously fascinating concept.
  • Jeremy and Damon are going to be great together.
  • The copious use of “fuck” during the hour makes me incredibly happy.
  • Please know that Eve just being out there somewhere will forever bother me.
