Marina Squerciati Talks ‘Chicago P.D.’ and That Life-Changing Decision for Burgess [Video]
The latest episode of Chicago P.D. is a pivotal one for Kim Burgess.
On Chicago P.D. Season 8 Episode 5, “In Your Care,” Burgess decides to take in Makayla, the young girl she’d bonded with just a couple of episodes prior.
I spoke with Marina Squerciati, who plays Burgess on the series, about this life-changing decision for her character and how it might affect her relationship with Adam Ruzek moving forward.

Becoming a mother means the potential for some really interesting storylines for Burgess, which Squerciati is excited about.
“It’s great as an actor to just have different things to play, different things to do,” she said. “It’s a new way to attack every episode as well.”

It isn’t a decision that Burgess takes lightly. There are certain challenges she knows she’ll face as a mother to Makayla. Though Squerciati said being a working mother will be the least of her concerns. “Burgess will survive. She will just be messier,” she said.
“For me the elements that really, I think we’re going to key into, are the fact that she’s white raising a Black child. I think Atwater will be a huge element in helping her with her blind spots there. And then, you know, she’s in a dangerous job, but a lot of female cops are.”
As for how this will affect Burgess and Ruzek’s relationship, Squerciati said there’s plenty to explore there as well.
“I feel like she wants Ruzek in that relationship and if he steps up I think she would allow it,” she said.

On the other hand, it’s definitely going to be a different dynamic.
“How do you continue a relationship that you’ve been in as a single person continuing it as a parent? You can’t really just like, have a one night stand booty call with Ruzek when you have a kid in the next room,” she laughed. “I mean, don’t think Burgess would.”
