Netflix has confirmed that The Crown will end with Season 5. The news comes two months after the premiere of the show’s third season, starring Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II.

It’s also been confirmed that Imelda Staunton will take over the role in Season 5, confirming a rumor that has been simmering for months.

“I have loved watching The Crown from the very start,” said Staunton in an interview with Deadline. “As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion.”

“I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty the The Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st century. Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman,” added series creator Peter Morgan.

In a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Morgan had previous stated that he envisioned six seasons of The Crown. As he was mapping out stories for Season 5, he came to realize that this was the natural end to the series.

Cindy Holland, VP of Original Content at Netflix added, “The first three seasons of The Crown defined an era, and I know the upcoming fourth season will build further on that success. It’s a stunning example of award-winning entertainment, created in the UK and loved by millions of fans around the world. I fully support Peter Morgan’s creative decision and am excited to see how he, Imelda Staunton and the cast and crew of Season 5, bring this landmark series to a fitting and spectacular end.”

The Crown recently debuted Season 3, but the series failed to make the ten most-watched titles list in the UK in 2019. Netflix will continue to work with Morgan however after signing an overall deal with him last year.

The Crown Season 3 is now streaming on Netflix.
