Who’s better to help solve crimes and stop killers than someone who understands the mind of a serial killer? No one.

The upcoming Fox series Prodigal Son shows us exactly that. The new drama centers on Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne), as he works with the NYPD to help solve crimes thanks to his understanding of the serial killer mind. That understanding comes from the fact that he’s the son of a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon,” (Michael Sheen).

Also starring in the series are Lou Diamond Phillips, who plays Malcolm’s longtime mentor Detective Gil Arroyo and Halston Sage, who plays Malcolm’s sister and TV journalist Ainsley Whitley.

This summer during the ATX Television Festival, in addition to getting a preview of the series premiere, we caught up with Lou Diamond Phillips and Halston Sage on the red carpet to discuss their roles on the series and what makes it different from other procedural dramas.

“What’s really wonderful is that the show really is its own creature,” Phillips said. “We have such an interesting and diverse cast. But it also has this ridiculously dark sense of humor.”

“It is a crime drama but it does focus a lot on the relationships between the characters which is what made it so appealing to me,” Sage added.

Sage then described her character, Ainsley, as “very successful” and “a little bit of a perfectionist.”

“She tries to be this positive influence and light in Bright’s life which is obviously very traumatic and dark,” she continued.

“And we both get to wear really nice clothes!” Phillips chimed in.

As for his character, Phillips said Gil is with the Major Crimes Unit. “When we meet him, he’s in the midst of a serial killer investigation,” Phillips explained.

That investigation leads him to enlist the help of Malcolm. “You start to get the sense throughout the show that Gil and Malcolm have a history together. And that’s one of the nice little reveals as we go along. We figure out how these guys know each other,” Phillips said.
