Preacher: The Major Plot Twists on “Bleak City” (Season 4 Episode 5)

Preacher, Reviews

As we hit the halfway point of the final season, Preacher Season 4 Episode 5, “Bleak City,” serves us with a few plot twists we don’t see coming — yet we love seeing. Below are the major twists and how their occurrence will hopefully guide the show into its conclusion.

Jesus is #TeamApocalypse

Out of all the plot twists “Bleak City” serves us, this one is the most shocking. When we are first introduced to Jesus it is implied that he is a prisoner of The Grail.

Then when he escapes with Tulip we are led to believe that he is repressed and is itching to rebel against dear old dad. It’s a side of the savior that we are all rooting to see because it’s a ballsy move that many television shows wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole.

However, none of us are prepared when we see him leave Tulip to attend a “convention” that is 2000 years in the making — only to find out that it is a meeting with All-Father Herr Starr and Hitler about the plan to end the world. If Jesus rebelling is a ballsy move then what is Jesus working hand in hand with Hitler, one of the worst humans in history?

Either way, this reveal leaves us much to think about as we go into the second half of the season. The biggest question is just what will Jesus bring to the table? Will he be an active participant or a passive observer?

At this point in the story, it is hard to say, but one thing is for sure, Jesus partnering with “evil” is bound to create an epic battle for mankind.

Eugene is not a fan
Preacher Season 4 Episode 3 - Ian Colletti as Eugene Root/Arseface

This whole series our one true north has been Eugene “Arseface” Root. From the beginning, he has more faith than anyone else on the whole show. Preacher successfully molds him into the complete opposite of Jesse to create balance.

Even after Jesse sends him to hell, it seems that Eugene is still faithful to him. In fact, on this episode, he plays the part of the dutiful parishioner very well — to the point that he seems weak and defenseless against Jesse’s charm.

However — in true mobster fashion — Eugene sits behind Jesse in the getaway car and leads Jesse into a false sense of security by reaffirming that he forgives the man for all his wrongs against him. Ian Coletti really showcases his talents with this scene because he manages to tell an entirely different story than the words coming out of his mouth through his eyes and his facial expressions.

This shift in Eugene marks the end of any semblance of innocence on the show, which can easily be seen as a metaphor for our current world. Various world events have cost even our youngest of children to lose out on their innocence.

Eugene is the perfect analysis of what it means to raise a child in a violent world — eventually, the violence and anger will win out over the goodness and calm. As we go into the final battle, he will be one to watch for because of his sudden change in allegiance and values.

Cassidy and Tulip Partners in Crime

This isn’t really a major plot twist but it’s still significant just the same. From the start, “Bleak City” has us thinking that both Tulip and Cassidy have all but given up on Jesse. They are both making comments about leaving him behind.

Then Cassidy asks Tulip to come with him to Australia in search of Jesse, and it starts to become obvious where they will end up. It’s where they will always end up, even if fans feel they deserve better.

It is comforting to see Tulip resist it at first, but then she does leave and comes back to pick up Cassidy. It would have been so much more satisfying if she comes back for Cass and then heads back toward Vegas.

It’s always interesting to me that Preacher constantly shows moments where Tulip and Cassidy forgive Jesse of his sins. While it is nice to always see the trio work together to solve a problem, it would be less predictable if these characters manage to stay mad and hurt by Jesse for more than an episode or two.

The end of the world will be much more exciting if Jesse has to defeat God on his own.

Archangel loves a Demon

This plot twist is merely a fun little mention amongst all the major carnage elsewhere. It isn’t necessarily important to the overall plot but, it still surprises us anyways.

When Archangel starts talking about passionate sex we think, much like Cassidy, that he’s talking about some average woman. And by all accounts when she first turns up it seems like she really is.

This leads to Archangel stabbing her with his sword which causes a never-ending battle between Archangel and Demon.

The coolest thing will be if this plotline steps out of the shadows and actually bears a huge significance to the endgame. What if Archangel and Demon step in and prevent God or even Hitler — their commanders — from going forward with their ultimate plan?

Whatever Preacher decides it is sure to sound great and look phenomenal as well — even if it is just an Archangel and a Demon fighting it out some more.

Further Preachings:

  • Despite losing his patience with Jesse, Eugene is still the most faithful of everyone — as witnessed by his giving of last rites to all the people Saint killed.
  • Herr Starr needs to be careful who he manages to piss off because Hitler is not a good choice.
  • Now that Eugene has successfully stopped Jesse from getting away, what is going to be Saint of Killers purpose for the endgame?

  • Hi, I believe the name of the actor playing Kamal is Miritana Hughes, not Miritani. Also, the episode involving David Field’s Archangel and Miritana Hughes’ Kamal is Episode 5 of season 4, titled “Bleak City”.
