Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Reviews

It’s often that the conclusion of a two-part episode holds the most satisfying, exciting, and tension building moments of the two parts.

On Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 Episode 9, “Collision Course Part II,” this hypothesis proves true. Where “Part I” set up all of the dominoes, “Part II” knocked (almost) all of them over, and even stomped on a few.

“Collision Course Part II” kicks off pretty soon after “Part I” ends, all the characters embroiled in high stakes conflict. Even though you know that most of the characters are going to make it out alive, the delivery matters, and “Part II” did not disappoint.

Even though “Collision Course Part II” reads like a conclusion, it’s clear the story is far from over. The two part episode, while exciting, is mostly about bringing the primary S.H.I.E.L.D. team back together.

Sarge and his crew aren’t able to keep control of the ship, Fitz and Simmons get rescued, and Daisy manages to stop the atom bomb from going off in several high-octane story threads.

But disguised among the action are satisfying character moments sprinkled throughout. Jaco is liberated from Sarge’s mission and saves the world. Fitz reunites with his team, his best friend (Mack), and his grandson.

Better still: Mack realizes he was wrong to distance himself from Yo-Yo when becoming Director. Their reunion is both poignant and sweet, and Henry Simmons and Natalia Cordova-Buckley do some of their best work on “Collision Course Part II.”

Mack: I screwed up

Mack and Yo-Yo’s reunion is the highlight of the episode for me. Though I’m a tremendous FitzSimmons supporter, it’s tremendously satisfying to get invested in a romance that’s not played for laughs (Deke and Snowflake) and with characters that aren’t original to the show (like Fitz and Simmons) but are still central to the story.

More than anything, “Collision Course Part II” serves two major purposes: to bring the entire main cast back together, and to get Yo-Yo and Mack back together. Both of these are executed to perfection, and they don’t lose their air of mystery, either.

Izel’s escape and Sarge’s identity remain the two biggest mysteries, but if those are executed as well as “Collision Course Part II,” Season 6 should reach a satisfying conclusion.

A few stray thoughts:

  • Coulson theory time: My new theory is that Sarge is possessing Coulson’s actual body, from this universe, and that it’s fully healed (and maybe Coulson is even in there). That would mean Deke’s repeated references to the multiverse are red herrings or for some other purpose, but I’m just hopeful to get OG Coulson back.
  • Natalia Cordova-Buckley’s work should be recognized for more than just her scenes with Mack. Yo-Yo’s powers were central to rescue the members of her team, and her heart-to-heart with Jaco turned the tide of the whole thing.
  • Obviously, Izel rode out of that ship inside Davis’ body, right? Which means she and Sarge are alike, right? And she obviously is behind May shooting Sarge, right?
  • “He keeps calling me Bobo.” “That’s what you wanted to be called.”
