The Bachelorette Recap: Pardon the Interruption (Season 15 Episode 3)

Reviews, The Bachelorette

On The Bachelorette Season 15 Episode 3, Hannah’s one-on-one date takes an unexpected turn. Cam overplays his hand, and Luke P. pushes his luck.

If I was forced to compare The Bachelorette Season 15 to a cookie, I would have to say it is an Oreo with zero cream filling: two chocolate cookies locked together which is okay, but it lacks the really good stuff in between.

The Bachelorette herself is turning out to be a rather delicate flower, prone to an inexplicable breakdown during the rose ceremony (only week 2). It’s unclear how she’s going to handle the really heavy lifting when she has to carry all of this emotional baggage overseas.

Chris Harrison sets Hannah up for a rough week when he warns the guys their time with her is “fleeting,” and they really need to take advantage of it. Why not wrap Hannah in bacon and place her in front of a pack of hungry dogs?

Jonathan, Matteo, John Paul Jones, Tyler C., Mike, and Cam are chosen for a group date which includes celebrity fans Jason Biggs (Orange Is the New Black) and Jenny Mollen (Angel) who are married with two children. No offense, but they don’t carry the same cache as Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis who appear on Rachel Lindsay’s season.

I have zero doubt none of these guys are familiar with Mollen, but it’s a given every single one recognizes Biggs, “The guy from American Pie,” as John Paul Jones so adeptly puts it.

Biggs and Mollen are on hand to provide comic relief while the guys try their hand at child care. Don’t worry, not even ABC has the liability insurance necessary to let these men near real children. This is an especially good thing since many of them don’t even understand the basics of female anatomy and human reproduction.

It feels like a giant waste of time hooking these dudes up to a labor stimulator. Save that for the politicians in Hannah’s home state.

While the guys endure some pain during the daytime portion of the date, the cocktail party has some agonizing moments of its own.

Jed is the first one to snag Hannah, along with several chicken nuggets from the table. A girl claims to be a fan of a fast food item, and there are nuggets for days. The next Bachelorette should stress she’s a fan of cars, jewelry, and cold hard cash.

Hannah reveals she’s interested in moving to Nashville, and Jed happens to know someone who lives there (it’s Jed, Jed’s from Nashville). Jed decides they should make a wish and throw chicken nuggets off the roof (he pulls two out of his jacket pocket). Oh, and Jed’s mind is unexpectedly, completely blown. He feels they’ve taken the first real step in their relationship.

Cam is very eager to get his alone time with Hannah because he’s convinced he’s had less time with the Bachelorette than anyone else.

On these speed dates, it’s about quantity and not quality. These guys have got to make a lasting impression which means unloading about some personal tragedy. It’s not that I’m unsympathetic to trauma, it’s just so forced and impersonal sharing it this way.

The whole baby-themed date brings up painful memories for Mike who went through a miscarriage with an ex. Enter Cam, who interrupts Mike’s confession, making Cam look even worse than he already does. Cam excuses himself but returns almost immediately.

Before getting to Cam, aka “the walking don’t of dating.” I have to say that Mike rebounds pretty swiftly after recounting the earth-shattering event that made him cry harder than ever before. Hannah gives him “hope” which could be code for “tongue.”

Cam thinks it’s imperative Hannah knows he resigned from his job to be a cast member on The Bachelorette. BFD. Many of these guys have no profession — John Paul Jones’ job is literally being John Paul Jones. Cam misinterprets Hannah’s many calls for boldness.

Whatever Cam has, it’s catching because Jonathan delivers the message to Cam his time’s up and some manhandling occurs. Not just between the two overzealous suitors, but involving Hannah as well. At this point, Hannah needs to prove she’s as bold as she wants everyone to believe and get these boys in line.

Hannah gives the group date rose to Mike who “showed another way to be bold.”

Connor S. (now the only Connor left) receives the one-on-one date, but plans go awry when Hannah winds up in the emergency room. We don’t get any details other than she doesn’t feel well. She gets pumped full of fluids and sent back to her hotel room.

But not even a near-death experience is a good enough excuse to call it a day. A perfectly healthy-looking Hannah invites Connor to keep her company while she recuperates from her mystery illness.

Connor comes bearing soup, flowers, and a card. It doesn’t matter Hannah is “sick,” or that she just got back from the hospital, Connor can’t wait to stick his tongue in her mouth (don’t worry, it’s not contagious). It also isn’t one-on-one time if the guy doesn’t bring an offering — a quick anecdote as to why he’s so special.

In this case, it’s the fact that Connor’s mother had a stroke during a family ski trip. But this taught him all about sticking together in sickness and in health. It just all fits together a little too perfectly, right?

Hannah rallies and finds the energy to give Connor his rose and enjoy a private concert.

The second group date is a shameless tie-in to the upcoming film The Secret Life of Pets 2. The men participate in a photo shoot with a bunch of cute and cuddly animals. Demi returns to spy on the men to try and catch somebody doing or saying something they shouldn’t, but guys appear to be falling between the cracks.

We learn Tyler G. is no longer in the running to win Hannah’s heart. Rumblings among the members of Bachelor Nation indicate Tyler G. isn’t as charming as he appears. The word misogynistic has been thrown around.

When early frontrunner Luke P. isn’t bragging about how he and Hannah are meant to be together, he’s imploding due to his insecurities. He can’t stand watching Hannah form connections with other men. Gee, it’s almost like he’s never watched the show before.

Luke P. is turning into a stage 5 clinger, and Hannah repeatedly tells him to back off both during the shoot and at the afterparty. He’s like a dog, and somebody moved his food dish.

While Luke’s game falls apart, Peter’s comes together. True, the pilot does think his parents’ love story is unusual — an airline pilot who marries a flight attendant — but he’s cute. Cue flying metaphors galore when Petey is piloting this romance. He also gets the group date rose.

Luke paces like a caged beast and interrupts Hannah’s time with the other guys. I would say that constitutes strike two.

Hannah decides to forego the cocktail party in favor of a tailgate party instead. The only thing on the agenda is rest and relaxation. Or it would be if it weren’t for Cam. He makes a big announcement to the other men that he’ll likely be going home because he’s got something huge to tell Hannah. This is a potential game-changer for Cam.

This is Cam’s ploy to get the other guys to back down, and the term “pity rose” starts getting thrown around. Cam is pitiful, but it’s on such a variety of levels, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what he’s trying to tell Hannah. He’s got health issues, he almost lost a leg, he still could lose a leg, his puppy and his grandmother both died.

Basically, if there’s been a country song written about it, Cam’s lived it. Everybody else sees Cam as being very manipulative, and Mike decides to give Hannah a heads up.

Mike is still salty Cam interrupted his own pity party, so is Mike really looking out for Hannah, or is he just getting revenge? Hannah does get manipulated. It’s just Mike pulling the strings instead of Cam.

Hannah eliminates Jonathan and Cam. Roll Tide! Let’s all go get some chicken nuggets.
