Chicago Med Review: Forever Hold Your Peace (Season 4 Episode 21)

Chicago Med, Reviews

It’s the penultimate episode of Chicago Med for the season, which sets up a pair of heartbreaking stories, and some forward movement for a couple on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 21, “Forever Hold Your Peace.”

If you’ve been reading my reviews over the season, you’ll see there are times when I find the episode title especially meaningful in the stories they tell throughout the hour. “Forever Hold Your Peace,” is one of those hours.

Connor’s dealing with hard truths about some of his prized childhood memories, thanks to a confrontation with his father. There’s a new tension in their argument that feels ominous and only gets worse as he asks his childhood nanny, Carlotta, about those specific moments in his childhood.

It takes a heartbreaking beat for the realization to hit Connor, that his mother not only missed out on one birthday but so many moments over the years, being insulated from the disappointment by the very man who was not always a good father.

Connor’s story is one of those Chicago Med arcs in the hour that takes the episode title literally.

He knows he has to apologize but gets to his father too late as Cornelius passes away at the hospital, leaving Connor with the apology and regret left unaired. Connor is stuck, holding onto any possible reconciliation, resentment, and emotions without knowing if it would have made any difference.

It’s a devastating position to be in, and in Connor’s case leads to another question that he asks Robin in a bittersweet moment with the pair after losing his father.

Connor: What else am I inventing?

Might his father’s death, his conversation with Robin, and the situation be the catalyst leading up to Connor’s exit?

Elsewhere, Daniel gets some news of his own that has him considering a future outside of Med after his ex-wife tells him about a new job offer away from Chicago.

In an upsetting twist, Daniel finds out that it’s not a job sending her away but the fact that the treatment has failed and that her cancer is not responding.

While Connor doesn’t get the chance to say his peace or even attempt to reconcile with his father, Daniel jumps at the chance, opting to speak up while he still has the opportunity.

After getting more of the Charles family together since Caroline’s return with hints of what the bond looks like when the underlying issues are no longer there, Daniel’s proposal makes for an incredibly sweet moment for the pair.

Daniel: I want to be there for all of it.

But with Caroline’s cancer not responding to treatment, will the newly reunited couple be able to make good on the promise, or is it too late?

With one hour left and (at least) a pair of exits set up, I’ve got questions about how their stories will play out.

Random Thoughts

  • After what they’ve been through and their bond over Vincent, it’s great to see Ethan and April not only getting back together but also protecting the baby, especially after the stunt Emily pulls at the top of the hour. But with that hint of something more at the end of their conversation with Emily, trouble’s bound to find its way between them and Vincent, right?
  • There’s something about the pregnant woman’s story that feels equal parts heartbreaking and frustrating.
