The Resident Review: Stuck As Foretold (Season 2 Episode 21)
We must start this review of The Resident Season 2 Episode 21, “Stuck As Foretold,” with Kyle — because I was rooting for him, but Nic knows best in this case.
Nic is a micromanager, and she needs to hear what Kyle has to say in the scene at the café, whether he’s a deadbeat dad or not. She’s putting too many of Jessie’s health issues on herself. Plus, she’s stubborn, so she needs to hear that out loud from as many people as possible.

Conrad has tried and Nic has made it clear to him that he’s not her priority right now, and she doesn’t want to hear what he has to say about her situation.
It’s a little bit maddening, but it’s Nic’s choice. She’s trying to blame him for that, but on Conrad’s end wanting a little bit more of a commitment from her isn’t unreasonable.
They’re at an impasse that’s been written more realistically than most breakups on TV. There is no side to take or even a third party to blame. We just wait.

So when Kyle is telling Nic she has to take care of herself — just like Conrad has been trying to — there is a feeling of relief around the scene.
He says, “If I’m a match, we’re golden,” and I breathe a sigh of relief like an idiot.
I’m not a parent, but it’s still hard to believe someone would go as far as to check if they’re a suitable donor for their daughter and then back out.
Not only that, but in the scene where Nic kicks him out, Kyle is so unsupportive of Jessie. As if he knows for sure she’s going to relapse. As if he’s been there for Jessie his whole life, like a real father should be.
Nic has been there, and she still believes in her sister.

So, I suppose Nic and Jessie only need each other.
Nic and Kyle scream so loud in that last scene, it’s surprising that Jessie doesn’t wake up. That would’ve added a touch of power to the moment — watching Jessie realize that Nic has been right about their dad all along.
It also would’ve taken some of the “mothering” pressure off of Nic. But then again, perhaps that would literally break Jessie’s heart.

It’s great to see Kitt’s heart getting some attention but very hard to pick a suitor for her definitively.
Brett is so likable. But Bell has weirdly transformed from a villain into a semi-good person without a tremor that he hides.
I suppose Kitt’s future is literally wide open in case Jane Leeves lands her pilot. But I love her on The Resident so much. It has to be said.

Conrad’s story right now feels even more wide open than Kitt’s.
It’s very hard to suspend disbelief when he donates blood while they’re in the oxygen chamber doing surgery on the patient.
Like Mina says, blood needs to be processed. I understand the idea of going to extremes to save a life and that the health care system has way too much red tape. But watching him in the hyperbaric chamber sticking a needle in his arm feels… completely unbelievable.
Then again, Mina says something else in that scene that completely explains Conrad’s behavior. She says something like “we’re not in Iraq.”

Sometimes I forget that Conrad was a soldier. It’s a part of his story that the series has never shown us — but they really need to soon. It explains a lot of his reckless decisions that otherwise seem downright… well… can I just say ballsy?
Conrad has to save Nic from Alec’s recklessness for the rest of the season — and Jessie has to survive. But in Season 3, let’s get some flashbacks. I want to know Conrad better.

Doctor’s Notes:
- Mina noticing The Raptor in a romantic way without any pressure or confession from him is the content we deserve (but didn’t realize we deserved).
- I want to like Shira, but a menacing reveal on your first episode pretty much guarantees that won’t happen.
- The episode is very respectful of furries, and furries like The Squirrel deserve respect.
- Grayson’s annoying self has grown on me.
- It’s such a relief that Conrad’s patient’s story has nothing to do with homophobia.
