Preview — The 100 Season 6 Episode 1: Sanctum
The 100 returns for Season 6 on April 30th at 9/8c on The CW, and after a hiatus full of radio silence we were beginning to understand how Clarke felt when Bellamy never responded during the six years they spent apart.
As the wait comes to an end, though, we’re now overwhelmed with new and exciting information about the new season, and the new journey that The 100 is taking in Book Two.
Written by creator and showrunner Jason Rothenberg and directed by Ed Fraiman, The 100 Season 6 Episode 1, “Sanctum,” seems to pick up right where Season 5 left off with a select group of survivors woken up by Clarke and Bellamy.
While it may have been nearly a year since we’ve seen the last surviving members of the human race, and over one hundred and twenty-five years since they went into cryo-sleep, the events of The 100 Season 5 are still extremely fresh for these characters.
“Sanctum” appears to split into two storylines: one group exploring life on the sanctuary Monty and Harper lead everyone to and one group “facing the consequences of their decisions” on the ship they spent the majority of their lives on.
From the promo images below, it looks as though Clarke, most of the remainder of Spacekru, Mackson, and Shaw comprise the team that goes planetside while Abby, Raven, and Jordan stay behind to man the mothership.
While this episode has a big responsibility to introduce us to an entirely new world and essentially re-pilot the series, it also carries the weight of a lot of important conflict left in the rubble of The 100 Season 5. These characters may have worked together in order to get safely off of the planet, but they have not forgotten that many of them were on opposite sides in the war for the valley; allegiances shifted quickly leaving many relationships in complete disarray mere hours before the end of the world.
The trailers for the upcoming season have Clarke on the defensive amongst her friends. After turning against them and risking their lives to keep Madi safe above all, Clarke will have to prove herself to her friends once more. She’s sacrificed, perhaps, more than anyone, but turning her friends over to be tortured–or even killed–pretty much eradicated all of the good will she earned when she “died” for them at the end of Season 4 (and all the other times she saved their lives before).
Clarke wasn’t the only one whose relationships suffered over the six-year time gap and the following war for Eden. All of the members of Wonkru were forced to sacrifice varying degrees of their humanity in order to survive. Octavia began to work toward some semblance of redemption at the end of Season 5, but Rothenberg has indicated that that road is going to be a long one for her.
Meanwhile, with Abby and Raven both awake and both on the ship in the preview images for “Sanctum,” we can hope that The 100 will begin to repair the damage that was wrought on their relationship last year. Abby’s addiction turned her into a monster that she didn’t want to be, and Raven saw the worst of it. Now that she’s clean Abby will likely have to work to earn back Raven’s trust and friendship.
She may have her hands full at first, however. At the end of Season 5, Kane was attacked and his fate left up in the air as the show headed into hiatus. Kabby fans are eagerly waiting to see if Abby can work one more miracle and save his life.
