9-1-1: Top Quotes from “Broken” (Season 2 Episode 14)

9-1-1, Quotes

Quite a bit of action gets unpacked on 9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 14, “Broken.” So much, that to do the show real justice, I decided to look at it from the quotes that made the moments great.

Between friendships, parenthood, and emergencies, everyone gets their fill! No two moments overshadow each other, but all of them create safe spaces of healing and growth.

Here are the top quotes from “Broken.”

The Hen and Chim Show

Hen: I guess Maddie still sparks joy?

Chim: Yeah.

Hen
Hen 9-1-1

Throughout the entire series, these two have always been as thick as thieves. They’ve seen each other through all the struggles and triumphs of the job.

In the wake of Chim’s harrowing ordeal, it is only natural that his, for lack of a better term, best friend is there to help him heal both physically and emotionally. Hen knows him better than he knows himself so she is the best one to converse with him about Maddie and where that stands.

This whole exchange, while Chim is sorting through clothes is intimate and open. You find yourself believing in Chim’s words when he tells Hen he is fine. And then Hen has you nodding your head in agreement when she challenges those statements.

These two are #FriendshipGoals!

Eddie the Brave

Buck: If I ever did that, you would yell at me.

The bond between Eddie and Buck has really blossomed this season. It started off with a bit of jealousy but has essentially morphed into a relationship of mutual respect. In fact, there are times Buck even seems in awe of all that Eddie can do.

No such moment shows that more clearly than the moment Eddie scales a house, catapults himself through a window, and ultimately saves a young boy. Buck is left on the ground wishing his ladder hadn’t broken so that he could have had some of the action.

There is also an air of pride in his friend. Buck won’t ever say it but, Eddie’s Spiderman actions has Buck feeling so accomplished. You can see it in his eyes when he teases his friend afterward, Buck aspires to be as badass as Eddie.

The Breakdown of Henrietta

New Father: I know I’m damn sure not ready to do this without you, but I will. I’m going to figure it out.

9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 14 - Skye P. Marshall and Aisha Hinds as Henrietta 'Hen' Wilson

Hen has always been a character who gets emotionally invested in her patients. It’s what we love the most about her.

On “Broken” Hen thinks that she has lost her patient, a new mother, and so she completely loses herself. This is the first time we have ever seen Hen completely lose control of her emotions on the job.

While she gets invested and shows that she cares for each person, she never puts forth an emotional reaction. That is until she delivers a beautiful baby and can’t fulfill her promise to take care of the mom.

Even more beautiful and raw to see was the relief that washes over Hen’s whole face when the mother comes back. These little body cues, while seemingly insignificant, show the world that Hen is the type of EMT you want to save you.

Josh the Wise

Josh: Everyone knows ignoring an injury only compounds the pain.

The addition of Maddie this season has really changed the dynamic of the show. She immediately falls into step with the various groups of first responders all because she is related to Buck.

However, “Broken” gives us something we didn’t realize Maddie needed until it happened, a friend. Josh is sweet and gentle, always willing to lead by example. So it comes as no surprise that he would now stand with Maddie and try his best to help her.

Maddie initially mentions her second chance, first date with Chim to Josh as they are dealing with emergencies. He immediately steps in and lets her know he has suggestions for dinner.

The most pivotal moment for our steadfast Josh comes at the end when Maddie realizes she didn’t make any reservations. Josh doesn’t even pause; he immediately goes into helpful friend mode.

This whole exchange makes us believe that Josh could be the greatest of friends to Maddie when she needs them the most. He isn’t going to let her table dealing with her hurt and grief.

Parenting Made Simple

Bobby: I’m no one’s father.

Michael: But you’re about to become someone’s stepfather.

These two men have been very good about respecting each other’s roles in Athena’s life so far. Now a small amount of jealousy on the part of Michael almost derails all that they have established.

As a father, it is hard to not feel abandoned and offended when our child goes straight to the step-parent. Michael is clearly hurting and lashes out at Bobby because he’s the easiest target.

When Michael finally finds it in him to apologize, what results is the most beautiful heart-to-hearts 9-1-1 has ever done. By clearing the air, these men can find it within themselves to keep moving forward with Athena for the greater good.

They are finally able to fully respect one another because they now better understand each other’s intentions. As Michael puts it they are both father figures to Harry now, they may as well respect each other’s boundaries.

Good-Bye For Now

Maddie: Just a minute.

9-1-1 Season 2 Episode 11 - Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Kendall and Kenneth Choi as Howie 'Chimney' Han

From the beginning, fans have been rooting for Maddie and Chim. However, we knew it would take time. So it was with great joy that we watched them trying to make sense of their feelings.

After an ordeal as traumatizing as what Maddie was put through, it’s only fair to assume she isn’t going to heal overnight. That road to healing is also going to be paved with heartache and pain.
