The Last Ship Review: Somos la Sangre (Season 5 Episode 7)

Reviews, The Last Ship

The ugliness of war is just the beginning on The Last Ship Season 5 Episode 7, “Somos la Sangre.”

We’ve seen our fair share of casualties on The Last Ship, but there’s something much more heartbreaking about seeing Miller severely injured, in gutwrenching pain, and knowing that his life has just been completely changed.

This season has actually spent a good bit of time on Miller, showing not only his job with the Navy but his humor and his vulnerable side as well. Not to mention his loyalty and his concern for his friends. So seeing this happen to him — it just hits that much harder.

It’s a different approach too, which makes for more unique storytelling. There are have been plenty of injuries this season so far, but they’ve often been ones these soldiers have been able to recover from.

Usually, it’s either that or the character dies. Here — and let’s be clear, he’s not out of the woods — it at least seems like he’s going to make it, but what comes next? Completely life-altering.

It makes me disappointed that the show is ending soon, but because it would be so fascinating to see how he moves forward from this long-term — really dealing with how it will change things for him.

This all happens as the team on the ground finds themselves outnumbered, but they still fight like hell and manage to regain control, at least… for a moment.

What they discover is far more frightening. They’ve realized there’s a plan for communications back home to be taken down.

And they make that realization as that plan is already set into motion, leaving us with one heck of a cliffhanger. Watching that plan unfold is pretty riveting. From the moment Kelsey “surrenders” you wonder exactly how this will all go down.

The food, the pill, it all comes together and then… then you recognize that paramedic.

The focus that’s on Slattery in all of these shots makes me worried more for him than anyone else.

As much as I’d prefer to focus more time on previously established characters, this entire setup is thoughtful and gives us insight into the villains of the story, much like I mentioned in my review of The Last Ship Season 5 Episode 6, “Air Drop.”

These people are human, and give a father no other choice in order to keep his daughter safe? He’ll do anything.

Even spending that kind of time on setting up the events that happen at the end of the episode, it’s shocking, if anything, because of the grand scale.

We’ve never seen The Last Ship‘s team put into a position quite like this. It’s honestly a genius way to end the series.

We’re seeing them face entirely new challenges, and after watching their military — the government — the entire country — be rebuilt is a really interesting way of seeing things come full circle. Now we’re testing what’s been rebuilt, and that’s powerful.
