The Good Place Review: The Ballad of Donkey Doug (Season 3 Episode 5)
Jason attempts to help his loved ones change their lives around for the better. Meanwhile, Chidi has to make a huge life decision on The Good Place Season 3 Episode 5, “The Ballad of Donkey Doug.”
Jason can be emotional, in his own way, when he wants to be and I like that we get to see that again on this episode. His intentions are pure, even if he doesn’t know how to go about them correctly.
It’s an understatement to say that Jason and his father are alike. Jason and his dad are almost like twins, in the way that they do literally everything the same. The same quirks, mannerisms, and attitude. Jason never had a chance with his father the way he is.

I do find it sweet that Jason’s dad sacrifices himself to the cops so Jason can get away safely. I would say that I hope he shapes up and changes his ways, but I don’t think that’ll ever happen.
Jason’s best friend, on the other hand, he might be able to change his ways if he continues to believe the lie that he’s now working with NASA. All he has to do is get clean and quit committing crimes, which I think he can achieve with the thought that he’s truly a spy for NASA.
Chidi’s desire to call things off with Simone is in the best interest for everyone, but he desperately needs to figure out how to do things easier. Even with Janet building a simulator that allows him to practice breaking up with Simone however many times he needs, he stills fails with the real follow through.

Simone was good for Chidi for a long while, but now she needs to allow him to do his own thing because ultimately he would end up spilling the beans on the world if they continued to see each other. Simone is a kick-ass woman who has a fantastic profession, is smart, beautiful, and incredibly intelligent. She’s a real catch and anyone would be lucky to have her as their partner.
With Chidi not wanting to be with anyone in fear of letting the truth out about the world him and Eleanor will probably end up getting together. He wouldn’t have to pretend about anything with Eleanor and could always talk freely about how he’s feeling because he’s not keeping a dire secret.
As for next week’s episode, I can’t wait to see what Eleanor does to her mother because her reaction to finding out she’s alive was not the reaction I thought we were going to get. It’s going to be really interesting seeing their reactions towards each other after she faked her own death.
Other Thoughts:
- It’s only a matter of time before someone, like The Judge or Shawn, shows up to come after Michael and Janet.
- Janet using the simulator to spend time with Jason in a onesie is downright hilarious. She loves him so hard, it must be hard to have to watch him with Tahani.
Favorite Quotes:
- “Bing! I usually appear out of thin air and there would be a pleasant bing sound, but I don’t have my powers so I’m doing my own bings now. Bing!” – Janet
- “FYI, when the system boots up you might find yourself in a steam room with Jason who will be wearing an old-timey strawman onesie. It’s a bug in the system.” – Janet
- “Why not? More guys should be bi, it’s 2018. It’s like ‘get over yourselves!’” – Eleanor
