Superstore Review: Baby Shower (Season 4 Episode 2)

Reviews, Superstore

Superstore Season 4 Episode 2, “Baby Shower,” explores the pregnancies of both Dina and Amy in different, but also the exact same way… with a baby shower.

Sure, Dina isn’t really present for the baby shower since it’s really for Jerusha, and Amy doesn’t want one but gets dragged into it thanks to Jonah’s hair-brained scheme.

The shower aptly serves as the primary comedic catalyst in “Baby Shower.” It starts as a scheme for Amy to save money on baby stuff, and gets funnier when it backfires at every turn.

The shower’s quick escalation from registry scam to get a discount all the way to full-blown joint shower with Jerusha and Glenn showcased Superstore‘s innate ability to top itself constantly.

Not only that, but the humor in “Baby Shower” derives largely from the unexpected left turns the story continues to take. Amy and Jonah scheming to get discounts seems like a decent premise for an episode, but who would guess that Glenn and Bo would be stroller racing between cones by the end?

With “Baby Shower,” Superstore also showcases its innate ability to pair off any two characters and create a funny story. Glenn and Jerusha using Dina as their surrogate quickly spins off into Dina and Mateo taking Christmas card photos, creating a treasure trove of visual and physical comedy.

The topic everyone wants to discuss, though, is the continuing romantic relationship between Amy and Jonah, which hardly exists in “Baby Shower” other than giving their banter new context. Really, it’s brilliant.

The creative team recognizes how well the slow burn, banter-centric relationship between the two worked, and by keeping the relationship a secret from most of the employees, they’re able to maintain that.

Of course, they couldn’t give the relationship no service at all, so Garrett puts together the puzzle pieces before the end of the episode. It makes sense for him to know, and will certainly set up some incredible jokes over the next few episodes.

A few stray thoughts:

  • Any episode of Superstore featuring Bo is automatically ten times more hilarious than ones not featuring Bo. Johnny Pemberton is a national treasure.
  • Speaking of Bo, his assumption that the baby was Jonah’s just felt right.
  • I’d pay a small sum of money to get a look at the full Sturgis family maternity album.
  • Judging by how offended the likes of Cheyenne, Sandra, and Justine were at not being invited to the fake baby shower, I can only imagine how much worse things will be when they find out about Jonah and Amy’s relationship.
  • There were a lot of funny scenes, but my favorite was Dina telling Sandra, “I respect you as much as I hate you right now”

The jokes are firing on all cylinders, and Superstore keeps finding ways to keep the show the same and totally change it at the same time. “Baby Shower” is hysterical and sets up an exciting season.

  • Great review! I am glad that Dina and Garrett’s ship is getting some attention. I love them together so much. Lauren Ash is so gorgeous. LOVE HER.
Only Superstore could nonchalantly feature a male stripper in a diaper at a co-ed baby shower. Magic.

    • Thanks Janelle!

Agreed. Dina & Garrett forever. I met Lauren Ash once and she was very sweet.

Superstore makes even the tamest baby shower into an uproar. Thanks for your comments and for reading!
