American Housewife Review: Sometimes Cheaters Win (Season 3 Episode 3)

Reviews

Oliver learns a valuable lesson that Katie fails to teach and Katie’s mother makes a surprise visit on American Housewife Season 3 Episode 3, “Cheaters Sometimes Win.”

Right off the bat “Cheaters Sometimes Win” is my favorite episode of the season, so far. The comedy has been pretty consistent with the first two episodes, but bringing in Wendie Malick to reprise her role of Kathryn, Katie’s mother, is what sets the bar.

Kathryn’s drunk, no filter grandmother lifestyle is one that you wouldn’t want to share with children, but it does bring funny moments when the two combine. The worst thing about Kathryn’s unannounced visit is that she actively pushes Taylor to follow in her footsteps while her house is being rented out by six Germans because she’s broke and needs extra cash.

The worst thing about Kathryn’s unannounced visit is that she actively pushes Taylor to follow in her footsteps while her house is being rented out by six Germans because she’s broke and needs extra cash.

My favorite thing about Kathryn is how she shows up and says that it’ll be short, but brings her own margarita machine. That right there should be Katie’s first clue that this visit was not going to be as quick as she intended.

The story arc in this episode is one of my favorites, and I love that Kathryn, in the end, encourages Taylor to go to college and get an education, even if she still pushes a stewardess job on Taylor. At least now Taylor has that one voice in her head saying that college is bad is gone, and it’ll make it easier for Katie to convince her to stay on track.

Oliver is money motivated and only looks for a wad of green, which comes in handy sometimes. In this case, Oliver admits that he shouldn’t have cheated and bought a birdhouse because he wants to go to Harvard.

Once Oliver learns that his chances of Harvard could be affected he changes his whole attitude towards the situation.

Oliver’s love for money is the only thing motivating him to be good in school, which can be both a good and bad thing. Once Oliver realized that his permanent record is clean again he automatically goes back to not caring about lying to get the grade.

Doris is my favorite character on American Housewife, and I’m so glad that we’re getting to see so much of her this season. Her making Oliver run around in a bodysuit while her German Shepard’s chase and attack him is one of the funniest things from the episode, especially when Oliver chooses to go back to Doris instead of tutoring Taylor.

Favorite Quotes:

  • “Grandma’s right, I’m not having kids. They’re not worth it, so many disappointments.” – Anna-Kat
  • “Well, if I go to Cornell, I’ll be next to Niagara Falls, so when I get too depressed I can jump in a barrel and throw myself over.” – Oliver
  • “You could walk into any bar in Ibiza and end up riding around on some rich man’s yacht for the next two years.” – Kathryn
  • “My mom is scared of dogs, which is why I bought German Shepard’s and asked for them to be extra German.” – Doris
