Better Call Saul Review: Coushatta (Season 4 Episode 8)

Better Call Saul, Reviews

The tragedy that is Better Call Saul continues to take surprising twists and turns on Jimmy’s journey into Saul Goodman. But, more than that, the surprising twists and turns are directly affecting the fate of characters like Nacho and Kim Wexler, which adds a significant layer to the story.

On Better Call Saul Season 4 Episode 8, “Coushatta,” viewers are treated to another Saul Goodman-esque long-con, and some new information that could entirely change the fate of Kim Wexler.

To revisit Kim’s story, we needn’t go further back than to the previous episode. Better Call Saul Season 4 Episode 7, “Something Stupid,” paints a picture of how different Jimmy and Kim had become. It seemed clear at the end that Kim not being featured in Breaking Bad was a matter of two people who’d grown apart.

“Coushatta,” though, suggests that Kim could meet a much worse fate. Not only does she come up with a convincing long-con to get Huell Babineaux off with a slap on the wrist….but she LIKES it.

“Let’s do it again” – Kim Wexler

The long-con is wild. Jimmy travels to Huell’s hometown in Louisiana while writing letters and cards, and convinces other riders to join in. The letters, of course, were fake and in support of Huell’s character.

When some of the letters turn out to have phone numbers, of course, the DA calls them.

The best part, though, is Jimmy’s makeshift phone bank of burner phones. Better Call Saul has become such a tragic show, that we often forget that this spin-off came to be because Saul Goodman made us laugh on Breaking Bad.

Bob Odenkirk hasn’t lost his touch there, either. His southern preacher impression is a bit for the ages. I could watch an entire episode of just that.

Just as we think that Kim and Jimmy have irreparably drifted apart, their successful con of a smug Assistant DA lights a fire in Kim’s soul, which could mean all manner of things for her fate on the show.

If she continues to do things like this with Jimmy, she could go to jail, be disbarred, or worse. Which is exactly why viewers should now fear the worst for Kim, who has seemingly given in to an intrinsic need to scam people.

A few other stray thoughts:

  • We finally got some time with Nacho after a few weeks, and he is living the high-life. He doesn’t seem happy about it, though.
  • That said, Nacho ripping that dude’s earring out was pretty epic/cold.
  • Mike is having more issues with his underground crew, but I’m estimating we’re about one episode away from him throwing down with one of them. Personally, I’m hoping it’s Kai.
  • I would say that there’s also a 50/50 chance that one or more of the crewmen working on Walter White’s future lab meets the wrong end of Gustavo Fring’s box cutter.
  • Mike and Gus have an under-appreciated relationship. They are both no-nonsense, and watching them in scenes together makes for compelling television.
