The Outpost Review: The Colipsum Conundrum (Season 1 Episode 7)
The Outpost Season 1 Episode 7, “The Colipsum Conundrum,” manages to muster up a few interesting twists, while not doing much to quicken the overall story arc.
First off, I have to say I’m quite disappointed in Talon’s side quest with Janzo. It is cute to see them bonding — and even snuggling a bit along the way — but at this point it seems very unnecessary.
This quest seems to be way too drawn out. For a season that amounts to only 10 episodes, one would think they would use all 420 minutes wisely.

Maybe this wouldn’t seem so bad, if the rest of the time we were on the edge of our seat — reserving these moments to let us catch our breath. But unfortunately, Gwynn and Garret aren’t doing anything else all that exciting either.
Sure, they are establishing Gwynn’s struggle with coming into new power and new responsibility. That would be fine and dandy if it gave them a little more to do than just stand around and gab.
This isn’t to say that Imogen Waterhouse isn’t doing a good job though. Gwynn’s soul-searching struggle when a traitor is revealed really shines. She seems truly torn on how to react between sparing the man’s life, or using him as an example.
So many people in the real world want to have power as president, king or whatever — but they fail to see these kind of circumstances rearing their ugly head. Heavy is the head that wears the crown for a reason. There is little room for error in these life or death decisions.
The glamour of royalty isn’t always what it is cracked up to be.
This looks like a good place to be buried. – Talon

On the other side of the show, we see Marshal Withers get a taste of his own medicine, and I have to say — it is about time.
This smug son of a gun gets the tar beat out of him, and it is hard to really feel bad about it. We all know that he uses his power, on routine, as a way to manipulate his way through life. I’m sure we all know at least one person in our lives that does this very thing.
Of course, we can’t hire someone to do this to all the jerks in our lives — but at least we get to see Withers take it in their stead.
I can’t help but feel let down when someone comes to his rescue. I’m sure somehow this greasy goon will be able to weasel his way back to the surface and into Talon’s hair again.
With only a few episodes left in the season, his rise back to the top probably won’t take all that long. Hopefully, he will get to suffer a bit more along the way.

Okay, enough with that. I’m starting to sound like a sadist!
The most enjoyable moment of the episode comes with the attack on Captain Garret Spears.
While the attack itself seems sudden and cut kind of oddly, it is interesting to ponder the direction this could take the show. While the death of Garret seems unlikely, there is a chance he could turn into a plaguling temporarily.
I could imagine Garret’s infection somehow being used as a way to save the other infected civilians. His blood could be used as an anti-venom to counteract the effects of the virus. Since Janzo is the master chemist, I’m sure his ability would come in handy in creating this cure.
Care to place a bet?
Just kidding folks — I’m far from a betting man.

There are also other avenues this twist could take along the way. As long as they make something of this whole incident, I’ll be happy.
But if they just use a simple solution to solve this major turn of events — it will be rather annoying. After all, Garret himself said that not everyone who is bitten turns, so they could always go that route.
So far, The Outpost has been good at avoiding ruining things in this way. Let’s hope they don’t turn over a new leaf now.
