Suits Review: Sour Grapes (Season 8 Episode 7)
On Suits Season Season 8 Episode 6, “Sour Grapes,” there’s a common thread of characters letting go of their pride for something greater.
It’s not necessarily the strongest episode of the season, but it does some really interesting things when it comes to focusing on character.
“Sour Grapes” begins with Louis getting the news that he’s going to be a father in a pretty anti-climactic way, but his reaction is perfectly Louis. He’s so, so happy, and for a while, you get to experience that joy with him.

The joy is thwarted twice — first, with the issue of how Sheila and Louis are going to raise their children when it comes to religion. It’s something they haven’t discussed and something they both feel strongly about. It might seem unrealistic that the topic hadn’t come up if all of this wasn’t moving so quickly in the first place — and it does have to move quickly.
Nevertheless, it’s come up now, and what that really does is give us a chance to see their relationship continue to develop.
They’re both stubborn people, let’s be honest, and they’re figuring out that they have to make sacrifices to be able to work together. I really enjoy seeing that kind of growth for Louis, but it’s also been nice to see with Sheila. Her willingness to start a family in the first place is a major step for her.
It makes me wonder if she’s going to resent Louis if none of this pans out — because the pregnancy turns out to be a false positive, and they were already struggling as it was.
I hope not, especially since the marriage proposal is so perfect. They are both so happy in that moment, and they feel like a real team.

If that moment isn’t enough to make you cry, the moment when Gretchen takes Louis in her arms to comfort him while he deals with the news that the pregnancy isn’t real should. The friendship those two have developed such a joy to watch.
Meanwhile, both Harvey and David Fox have to learn to face their pride as well. For Harvey, he has to set aside his dislike for David Fox because of the deal Donna made on his behalf. He doesn’t want to at first — and he’s still learning to manage the new dynamic with Donna as COO.
She really shouldn’t have to remind him that she earned that position, but I love watching Donna stand up for herself in any situation, especially with him.
Donna continues to have an impact on Harvey and helping him grow as a person, and this is just another situation that proves it. But what’s surprising is the lesson that David Fox learns.
Believe it or not, this guy has a soft side. The ruthlessness we’ve seen of him so far is actually a defense mechanism.
It’s always so interesting to me to see this happen with a villain and to have the chance to learn their motivations and sympathize with them. The way that thread has been carried through with him is thoughtful writing.
It reminds me of Louis a bit, too. When we first met Louis, we saw that tough side of him and mainly saw him as a villain in Harvey and Mike’s world. Now, it’s impossible not to love him — not only has he changed over the years, but we’ve also gotten to understand him more.
The other delightful thing to come out of this case is seeing the friendship that’s developing between Donna and Samantha. Samantha is willing to help out because she wants to help Donna, and because she’s legitimately concerned about doing what’s good for the firm.

She’s yet another character who we’ve already changed our view on after getting to know more about her, and I’m honestly just really eager to see her have more scenes with Donna.
Elsewhere, Zane and Alex have the chance to work together, but it’s not Alex that’s learning from Zane. It’s the other way around (with a little help from Donna, obviously).
That’s the best part of this entire case — seeing Zane experience his own growth and being willing to take a step back and put himself in someone else’s shoes.
Alex also isn’t the type to back down or to be intimidated, not even by Zane.
It’s also a nice touch that when Robert explains why he bought a vineyard and the connection to his sister, he brings up Rachel. The show has done a good job all season of moving forward while also acknowledging that Mike and Rachel are now gone.
Even better, and evidenced well in this episode, is how it’s developing its newer characters.
