Younger Review: A Titanic Problem (Season 5 Episode 2)

Reviews, Younger

On Younger Season 5 Episode 2 “A Titanic Problem,” we see the beginning of the fallout of Charles learning the truth about Liza and it’s not pretty. Also, Josh returns and Millennial Print makes a deal to save the whole company.

Charles is angry, embarrassed and hurt over discovering that Liza has been lying the entire time he’s known her. And honestly, as hard as his reaction is to watch, his feelings are understandable.

He still has strong feelings for her and even admits to having been in love with her, but now he’s spiraling over the lie, making him question their relationship, his own judgment, and everything he knows about her.

Charles: Part of me is relieved she’s not twenty-seven, and then I think, how can she lie like that? Is she some kind of opportunist or is she some kind of sociopath? And then I-I cant stop thinking about her.

I am still rooting for Liza and Charles and now that he knows the truth, I actually have more hope that they’ll eventually succeed, but “A Titanic Problem” hurts my heart. For the sake of the company, Charles’ strategy to avoid Liza is probably the best option for now.

But watching Charles avoid her and treat her so coldly is hard to watch. I so desperately want to see Charles actually confront Liza about what he knows. It’s going to be a tough conversation and they may hurt each other, but there’s no way they can move forward professionally or romantically if they don’t talk about the truth.

Charles: Congratulations Liza, you really pulled it off.

On Younger Season 4, Charles said all that they ever do is talk, but I think that’s exactly what they need to do. I for one, can’t wait to watch that conversation.

I’m glad to see that Charles is no longer leading Pauline on. She’s just trying to be her own person and save her marriage and if their marriage is hopeless it’s better for her to know now than to keep trying to save something that’s already lost.

Charles and Pauline’s marriage isn’t the only one that’s over.

Josh returns from Ireland without Clare, only to learn she isn’t coming back to be with him at all. I can’t help but root for Josh’s happiness too. Writing Clare off the show feels like an easy way to retcon Josh being off the market, but since she was just using him, I can’t say I’m sad to see her gone.

I don’t know if there’s any hope left for Josh and Liza together as a romantic couple, but I love how strong their friendship is and how she’s still able to comfort him.

One of the best things about Younger is that the show continuously makes you love and care for each character by showing you their hearts.

Josh and Liza genuinely care for each other so much, but the problems that ended their romantic relationship before still stand. She can’t give him the life he really wants and her feelings for Charles are still very real.

Whether you’re team Josh or team Charles, we’re all team Liza and I can’t wait to see what she does this season.

OTHER THOUGHTS:

  • Millennial is working with Reese Witherspoon! Can we get that cameo later this season, please?
  • Charles venting about Liza, to his lawyer/friend who is Liza’s daughter’s roommate’s father, makes this whole story all the more convoluted. I feel like that’s bound to come back and bite them all in the ass at some point.
  • How will Pauline handle the fact that Charles isn’t interested in getting back together?
  • I love that the emotional motivator behind Charles’ decision to take the deal with Reese’s company rests on Diana in this episode. It takes Diana’s very real fear to push Charles to realize the only reason he isn’t taking the deal is that he’s dealing with his complicated feelings for Liza.
  • Kelsey is denying her feelings for Zane to his face, but she definitely doesn’t want anyone else going after him either. Their flirtation is fun and exciting with way less emotional baggage than Charles/Liza more, please!
