Maria Elena Laas and Ser Anzoategui Talk ‘Vida’ and LGBT+ Representation [Video]

In the era where the LGBT+ community is finally gaining the visibility, equality, and representation they deserve, the STARZ upcoming series Vida explores the authentic experience of this community with southern California’s Latinx society.

I recently had the chance to sit down with stars of the new series, Maria Elena Laas and Ser Anzoategui, to chat about the show and how the LGBT+ representation on Vida differs from other representation we may see on the small screen.

“What I haven’t seen in television characters that are LGBT+ are the levels of employment and class issues. I think that Vida shows the class struggles in a way that you don’t have to hit it over the head. You see it,” Anzoategui explained.

“It’s very subtle in every way. It’s a balance,” Anzoategui continued. “The show itself also really shows the vibrancy of the LGBT communities.”

“Something that I know about the show, also, with the LGBTQIA aspect is that it’s still very new [for the] Latinx culture to see these characters on television. And what it shows are the nuances and the different types, and what I really love about it is it’s also embracing different body types. We come from a culture that is very into a certain body, ” Laas noted.

“And it’s really lovely that [the show] is showing so much diversity even within that, and it’s just bringing more reality and realism into that world,” she elaborated.
