Shadowhunters Review: What Lies Beneath (Season 3 Episode 3)

Reviews, Shadowhunters

The identity of the wraith is revealed, Simon struggles with new abilities, and Raphael has to deal with a brand new vampire on Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 3, “What Lies Beneath.”

I would love to say that everything makes sense now that wraith is revealed to be Jace. The only thing that makes sense now is the reason why Jace hasn’t fought the wraith face to face, because it was him all along.

Other than that being a definite reason as to why Jace hasn’t caught him yet, everything else is still speculation. I think that Lilith is using Jace because he died at Lake Lyn where Jonathan died, so Jace could have a connection to him that he doesn’t know about.

Another thing that would make sense is the reason why Jace continues to see Jonathan. It could be because of that connection that he has with Jonathan, or it could be Jace’s moral compass trying to give him a hint at what he’s doing.

Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 3
SHADOWHUNTERS – “What Lies Beneath” – The Shadowhunters try to track down the new imposing threat, while Jace has a suspicion that Jonathan is back and behind the mundane attacks. Simon tries to figure out what The Seelie Queen did to him during his time in the glade. Alec decides to host a Lightwood family dinner at MagnusÕ house after a surprising visit from Maryse. This episode of “Shadowhunters” airs Tuesday, April 3 (8:00 – 9:00 p.m. EDT) on Freeform. (Freeform/John Medland)

It could also be a side effect of the Angel Raziel resurrecting him, but I don’t see how those two would be connected directly since Clary made no mention of Jonathan when asking him to bring Jace back.

Jace thinks that the wraith is Jonathan because deep down somewhere he knows that he is the wraith and he’s working towards resurrecting Jonathan. Jace’s hatred for Jonathan is unmatchable, which is why I think his mind is trying to give him hints that this is all connected to Jonathan. I truly don’t think that it’s happening solely from being resurrected.

There has to be a reason why Lilith chose Jace to be the wraith. Her end game could be that once Jace helps finish bringing him back, Jonathan will get to take out his revenge on Jace, which would make sense.

I’m glad that Clary went to Izzy about Jace and the way he’s been acting because if anyone knows Jace better than Clary, it would be Izzy or Alec. Now that Izzy has confirmation that the wraith isn’t Jonathan I hope she helps Clary confront Jace about his obsession issues.

Yes, the wraith is a horrible entity doing monstrous things, but going days with no sleep isn’t good for anybody. Especially not a shadowhunter who is seeing visions of his dead nemesis wherever he goes.

Raphael spending his last night with his sister before she passes away is heartbreaking because she’s the last person in his life that is his legit family. He’s had to sit around and watch as everyone he loves dies, but the icing on the cake is Rosa’s death.

I hope that Izzy and Raphael’s relationship can get back on better terms and start growing again because I think the two of them are good together. In the beginning, it seems as if the drug addiction was no longer a problem that haunts the both of them, until Raphael begins eyeing her vein.

At first I assume that Heidi was turned by Raphael, but I don’t think so anymore. She seems to be a little too powerful, even for a new vampire, to be turned by Raphael. If he has to use a tranquilizer on her to keep her held captive that means she has to be stronger than normal. It’s interesting that he won’t tell her who actually turned her.

Maia and Simon together is the absolute cutest thing to come from the show in a long time. I love how inseparable they are and how Maia wants to do everything in her power to figure out what’s happening to Simon.

Maia is even willing to go back to the Seelie Realm, where she could risk the chance of being kept hostage for eternity. If that doesn’t prove how deep her feelings for Simon are, I’m not sure what else does.

The two of them, Maia and Simon, have come a long way since the beginning of their friendship and I hope that we get to see more of it as the season progresses.

For once I’m upset and sad at Luke’s actions. First, he allows Russell back into the pack, which he knows was a bad idea from the very beginning, and now he’s actively listening to Russell when it comes to family he’s known for many years.

Luke is not just a werewolf, and his loyalty shouldn’t be put into question because Russell tried to have Simon beat up or killed and they didn’t succeed. It’s not Simon’s fault that the rune he was branded with fought back, but it is Russell’s fault that someone is hurt.

Instead of kicking Simon out, knowing that he doesn’t really have any other place to go, he should tell Russell to pack his bags and leave, yet again. It’s obvious Russell is not a team player and will always think that his views are the correct way and anything different is wrong.

As for Maryse’s dinner date with Magnus and Alec, who is this woman? Is this the same Maryse Lightwood that we know? Are we sure it’s not someone pretending to be her? I’m kidding, mostly.

In all honesty, I love that Maryse is a more open individual who has gotten over the values that were instilled in her. Magnus loves Alec with all of his heart and to see him bonding with Alec’s mom is a genuine happy/exciting moment. Especially when up until now it’s been obvious that she is judgy and has a problem with Alec dating a downworlder.

While I don’t agree with her being de-runed, I do think that Maryse is getting some of what she deserves from the Clave after learning that she recruited and helped set all of Valentine’s plans in motion.

Other Thoughts:

  • Ollie needs to understand that her connections to the supernatural will put anyone close to her in danger. I don’t think that she’s wholly thought about the consequences, just how cool it is.
  • Clary was defeated pretty quickly by the wraith for a shadowhunter who’s no longer in training and who killed Valentine.
