Good Girls Review: A View From the Top (Season 1 Episode 6)

Good Girls, Reviews

On Good Girls Season 1 Episode 6, “A View From the Top” the NBC drama doubles down on the crazy plans, which puts Ruby, Annie, and Beth in a situation where they are overconfident.

And, that definitely means trouble is in their future.

With her daughter’s medical bills on her mind, Ruby wants to end the trio’s business arrangement with Rio’s gang because it’s simply not enough money to risk jail time. They go into a conversation to end things with Rio when Beth suggests they clean even more money.

Good Girls jumps the gun when Beth decides to expand in order to be able to clean the larger amount of money. But, maybe that is the point.

The humor and unique tone of Good Girls is showcased best when the trio’s inexperience as criminals is showing. In the past, it has been the fumbling during robberies and now it is trying to bring more people into their enterprise.

The mistakes and humorous missteps provide some of the show’s best moments. They also make a great argument for not growing a criminal enterprise. If you aren’t very good at something, then doubling down just doesn’t make sense. It is also bad timing because the FBI is sniffing around and not a single crime has gone without a hitch.

The bold move simply doesn’t make much sense.

There’s an argument to be made that the show itself is aware of how little sense it all makes. The action jumps from deciding to expand to sitting down with recruits ready to become the trio’s “secret shoppers.” Why don’t we see how they were chosen?

In fact, watching them stumble through the process of choosing is exactly the situation where Good Girls would excel.

A circumstance where we see people they absolutely shouldn’t choose and instances where they really believe they have found the perfect addition. That’s an interview process worth seeing. And laughing at.

Beth’s confidence in the bold move is the most surprising part of it all. Does she really think they are experienced enough to have employees join their criminal expertise?

Rio is not taking these women under his wing and passing on criminal wisdom. Why is she so confident?

During the show’s series of unconventional and unrealistic events, the choices made sense. Even if the audience would never agree, the reason behind their choices are ones viewers can understand. Unfortunately, this is not one of them.

It feels like the first time the show put an interesting story development ahead of their characters and it knocks viewers out of the experience of watching the adventure.

One reason behind Beth’s choice could be her enjoyment of her new life rather than confidence in their skills. This new life of crime frees her from a cheating husband and a loss of control of her life. Wanting these things means Beth is more inclined to stick with Rio.

It invigorates her.

If that is the reason, then this could mean Beth will take even bigger risks in the future and that could be very problematic.

Beth ripping into her cheating husband when she reveals the truth about wanting to be a criminal then dumping the money in his lap. It was a badass moment that also shows just how much she is enjoying it all.
