Fear the Walking Dead Review: What’s Your Story? (Season 4 Episode 1)

Fear the Walking Dead, Reviews, The Walking Dead

We have Rick Grimes to blame for Morgan Jones joining Fear the Walking Dead.

Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 1 “What’s Your Story?” opens shortly after everything that occurs on The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 16 “Wrath.”

The first few minutes of the crossover is a bit painful. I just watched The Walking Dead Season 8 finale, and I wanted to get to the far superior of the two shows, and yet, it was like I was stuck watching more of the same.

Morgan has set up shop at Jadis’ old joint, the Garbage Pit and he is visited by residents of the Hilltop, the Kingdom, and Alexandria—Jesus, Carol, and Rick respectively.

Jesus is there because he has hardly been on The Walking Dead as of late, so he had to do something. Carol’s visit makes sense because Carol has been where Morgan is now, and well, Rick and Morgan have history.

Rick tells Morgan to come back because he can hide but he can’t run.

So, Morgan proves Rick wrong and starts running. He also walks, drives, and walks some more.

We’re introduced to two new characters, John Dorie and Althea. Morgan runs into John in the middle of nowhere when he stops to kill a walker. John wants company because it’s been about a year since he has spoken to anyone.

John is immediately likable. As we see later on the episode, he’s a good shot but doesn’t want to kill anyone. He is also looking for Laura, someone he had feelings for and who carries a gun matching his. We don’t know the specifics of how they parted ways but I’m sure it will be revealed later.

Althea shows up in a SWAT truck just in time to save Morgan and John from some baddies. John assumes she used to be in law enforcement, but she’s a journalist and wants their stories in return for her help.

How does Althea find gas for a truck that size? Or batteries for her video camera? It’s far-fetched that she would have these things, but they’re cool nonetheless.

Morgan is injured during another encounter with the same baddies and the fight sequence is cool and organic, unlike the choreographed fight scenes from all of Season 8 of The Walking Dead.

Even with an injured leg, Morgan insists on being on his own—and then nearly gets himself killed by walkers until John saves him. He finally says he’ll stay with John and Althea until his leg heals.

As they drive along to an unknown destination, they see a woman in the middle of the road ahead. She looks injured. It’s at this point that both John and Morgan inform Althea that they don’t kill people. It’s a comedic moment.

Althea approaches the woman and it’s someone we know–Alicia Clark.

She mumbles something about bad people and then raises a blade to Althea’s neck.

Out of the tall grass comes Luciana, Strand, and Nick Clark. Nick and Morgan, two men who said that they cannot die, have finally collided.

What is going on? There has to have been a big time jump on Fear the Walking Dead to get to where we are now. So, what has happened to the Clarks? Are they the baddies now? Or do they have reason to believe that Morgan, Althea, and John are the enemy?

“What’s Your Story?” is a great start to Season 4 of Fear the Walking Dead with the exception of the awkward crossover at the beginning. The way it’s filmed, acted, and written is top notch.

I was not expecting that ending, but wow, it is fantastic. It also cements Fear the Walking Dead as being the more interesting, daring, compelling show of The Walking Dead world.
